Vanita was born on November 5th, 1953 in Yreka, California to Larry and Ellen Walters (later Ellen Colburn). After graduating from Yreka High School in 1972 she went on to study Art at Chico State University, ultimately graduating with a Masters of Arts. In 1976, Vanita married Bill Ulch and the couple had one child together.
Vanita had varying jobs before she found her true calling as a teacher. She began teaching as a traveling art instructor at various schools in Shasta County before becoming a permanent teacher for the Redding School District at Juniper Elementary School (previously Juniper Academy), where she worked from 1996 until her retirement in 2014. Mrs. Ulch brought a passion to teaching that positively impacted hundreds of children’s lives and was recognized by numerous awards and commendations, including multiple Teacher of the Year awards. Her dedication, patient oversight, and positive attitude helped build a foundation for educational success for all who crossed her path. She was very passionate about teaching children how to read because “reading is the key to everything”.
Vanita was a force to be reckoned with and had the most infectious zest for life. She enjoyed her grandchildren, gardening, kayaking, bicycling, and making beautiful things. She was well known for her broad smile, strong hugs, energetic nature, and huge heart. She also devoted a large portion of her life to creating stunning artwork, some of which is still showcased in the ‘Spheres of Influence’ public art installations at Juniper School and within the Parkview Neighborhood.
Vanita is preceded in death by her father Larry Walters, mother Ellen Colburn, and step-father Rolla “Tom” Colburn. She is survived by her husband Bill Ulch, daughter Anna and son-in-law Ben Panike, and grandchildren William and Ember Panike; her sister Patricia and brother-in-law Trip Bailey and brother Chris Walters; plus numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A celebration of life will follow once Vanita’s family has had more time to process this immense loss. All will be welcome to attend and celebrate Vanita’s life. In lieu of flowers, donations in Vanita’s name can be made to Turtle Bay Exploration Park or the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
