Martha was my godmother! She actually suggested my Mom and Dad start dating since they were both single at the time. Martha was a bridesmaid for my Mom at their wedding. Martha is the niece of my Mom and my Dad. My Mom's brother was married to my Dad's sister.  We are "double cousins"! How lucky were we to be that, because we were always at the same family functions on both sides of the family, the Stuve's and the Cooney's! I have many fond memories of our Stuve and Cooney gatherings, and Martha was always there... Thanksgiving, Christmas, Reunions, birthdays, baptisms, anniversaries, weddings... being a double cousin was great, because we would always see Martha at everything! I remember when I was young, 8 or 9, Martha had me overnight at her flat on Bentley in Detroit. She took me to the Hudson building at Christmas time, and she made the BEST homemade pea soup! Martha always joined us for our family celebrations and would bring home baked goodies and always something special for my Mom. I moved away from Michigan 21 years ago. I was not able to see her for every family celebration after I moved, however she still celebrated Holidays with my Dad and siblings, and I was grateful to see her when I did visit. She was always cheerful, and it was so heartwarming when I did see her. Her red hair was unrivaled! I am glad I was able to see her on our recent visit to Michigan before she passed. I held her hand and told her, "I loved her", and my husband and three boys were there. I know she knew we were there. My heartfelt condolences to my cousins. Bob, Bill, Ruthie and Christopher, for the loss of such a beautiful soul, and so close to the loss of another beautiful soul, their sister Laura... creative, talented, funny, witty, super kind Laura. May you all take comfort in knowing they are at a rest and at peace and with your parents and Jesus Christ. Wishing you all prayers and Peace. It was always a pleasure having Martha throughout the years for the family Christmas, Easter or Summer gatherings!  We could always count on her for a tasty appetizer or dessert.  Regardless of what a terrible cook I am or what I managed to screw up for the holiday feast I could always count on a "this is delicious!" from Martha!  She was a sweet, kind, giving soul but also a fierce competitor!  I've never seen Martha so animated as she was during our family LCR games at Christmas or trying to peel the saran wrap ball to get the prizes.  She will be sorely missed and remembered at our gatherings!

It was a privilege to know Martha and to witness her great faith during the years Sister Gretchen and I lived at Christ the King parish and for years after that. I was happy to see and talk with her at the CK Hamburger fundraiser a few weeks ago. 

Thanks to all the parishioners who helped Martha with transportation and other acts of kindness. You are witnesses to the love of Christ.

How fortunate I was to be a classmate of Martha's at Immaculata High School and later  at UDMercy.  We shared our enjoyment and love of books. Martha truly lived Gospel values by generously sharing her talents and time. My heartfelt condolences to her family, neighbors and parish members.

Martha was a gem.  She had health issues but was always doing something for the church.  God bless.
