

Robert E. Bennane, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Detroit, Michigan, on January 8, 2025, at the age of 89. He was born on May 22, 1935, in Highland Park, Michigan, to parents whose legacy he carried with grace throughout his life.
Robert proudly served his country in the United States Army and Army Reserves. He was awarded a medal for good conduct during his time in the service, and at the time of his honorable discharge, held the rank of Sergeant.
Robert was a man of many passions and a life of hard work. He began his career with the United States Postal Service in 1953, dedicating himself to public service until his retirement in November 1990. For the last 10 years of his career, he proudly served at the Patrick McNamara Federal Building in Downtown Detroit. In addition to his time at the Postal Service, Robert worked with Olympia Arenas starting in 1963, where he contributed to the operation of the Joe Louis Arena, home of the Detroit Red Wings. As the Main Commissary Supervisor from 1979 until his retirement from Olympia in 2017, Robert’s work became an integral part of the stadium's operations, spanning across both the original Olympia Stadium and the newly constructed Joe Louis Arena.
Outside of work, Robert was a man with many hobbies and interests. He was a lifelong lover of movement and sports, enjoying activities such as ice skating, roller dancing, and ballroom dancing into his 70s. He was an avid skier, traveling across the United States, Canada, and Europe to pursue his love of the slopes.
Robert was also a proud supporter of the U.S. Olympic Ski Team and a member of the Playboy Ski Club. In addition, he spent many hours roller skating at the Riverside Arena in Livonia, a place that brought him much joy over the years.
Robert’s adventurous spirit was matched by his deep affection for his family. He leaves behind his son,
Jeffrey (Laura) Bennane; two granddaughters, Cheyenne and Natalie; and three great-grandchildren, Cali, Peyton, and KJ. He is also survived by his brother, Ken Bennane; his niece, Dana; his nephew, Todd; and his dear friend, Edith Herster. His loved ones will forever remember his kindness, dedication, and the joy he brought into their lives.
