Redford, Michigan, age 93
October 23, 1922 - March 19, 2016
Daughter of Garfield and Martha (neé Seiss-Gorbin) Nye. She was born October 23, 1922 in Detroit, Michigan, the fifth of eight children. (She was a direct descendant of Benjamin Nye, who immigrated from England to Sandwich, Massachusetts in 1635.) Virginia was baptized on January 21, 1923 at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Detroit (located at the time at Maybury Grand and Poplar Streets, prior to the construction of I-96, and later re-located to 4950 Oakman Boulevard in Detroit). She was confirmed on April 2, 1939 at St. John, and later completed her formal education at the Eighth Grade level also at St. John on January 18, 1940. After that time she stayed at home to help her mother take care of her younger siblings.
Virginia was a long-time employee of the J. L. Hudson Company, working in the mail room of the flagship store in downtown Detroit. She retired when the downtown store’s operations were transferred to Minneapolis. Virginia transferred her church membership to Guardian Lutheran Church, Dearborn, Michigan on September 10, 1975. While a member of Guardian, Virginia was a faithful member of the soprano section of the Adult Choir, a member of the Ladies’ Guild, was the long-time coordinator for funeral luncheons, and for many years decorated chocolate candies for the church’s annual Easter candy sale. She was also a Greeter, worked as a helper in the Library, and was involved in the annual Rummage Sale. In February of 2011, the Guardian Ladies’ Guild elected Virginia as the 2010 “Woman of the Year.”
Following the death of their mother in 1977, Virginia became the faithful, long-time caregiver of her brother, Gordon, until his death in 2005. In her free time, Virginia loved to knit, sew, and especially crochet, making countless afghans, sweaters, and delicate doilies and table runners.
At her request, Virginia spent her final days at home, in the care of friends and family. Many thanks are extended to Angela Hospice for their excellent care and support during this time. On Saturday morning, March 19th, Virginia fell asleep peacefully in the arms of her Savior.
She was preceded in death by sisters Irene Portscheller, Dolores Block, Barbara Doering, and brothers Floyd, Glenwood, Kenneth, and Gordon. She is survived by a number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and many faithful friends. Particularly helpful to Virginia in her last years were her niece, Mary Lou Block (wife of her late nephew, Larry Block), as well as friend and former Director of Music at Guardian Lutheran, John Matthias.
