William James Carothers

William James Carothers, of Redford, Michigan, passed away on October 3, 2025, at the age of 81. Born on August 30, 1944, in Detroit, Michigan, James lived a full and vibrant life defined by hard work, strong convictions, and a deep love for family and adventure.

James spent more than four decades as a long-haul truck driver, proudly hauling automobiles across the country. A proud member of the Teamsters, James took immense pride in his work, his union, and his role as a Union Steward. His career took him to every corner of the United States — even driving for Willie Nelson at one point — before his retirement in 2015.

Beyond the road, James was a man of many passions. He was deeply engaged politically and always ready for a good debate. He worked towards earning a pilot’s license and loved flying small planes. He also enjoyed time on the water, especially boating, and held fond memories of trips to Yellowstone National Park and ringing in the New Year in New York City with his beloved companion, Linda Hoes.

James is survived by his stepson, Brian Kos; his brothers Walter T. (Lynne) Carothers, Patrick (Ellen) Carothers, and Michael (Karen) Carothers; nieces and nephews Sandi, Dennis, Bradley, and Jeffrey (Rachel); and his special companion, Linda Hoes.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter F. and Mary Carothers, his nephew, Michael, his niece, Tracey, and his wife, Christine, whom he married in 1989 and who passed away in 2003.

A Funeral Mass will take place at 10:30 am on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at St. John XXIII Catholic Church, 12100 Beech Daly Road, Redford, Michigan 48239. James’ family will receive visitors on Friday, October 10, 2025, at the Harry J. Will Funeral Home, 25450 Plymouth Road, Redford, Michigan 48239, from 2:00 pm until 8:00 pm, with a Rosary Service at 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue Saturday at St. John XXIII Catholic Church from 10:00 am until the time of mass at 10:30 am with burial immediately after at Holy Sepulchre Catholic Cemetery in Southfield.
