Joy was born in Wichita Kansas on March 17, 1936 to Nels Russell Johnson (deceased) and Rubie Myrtle Wellke Johnson (deceased). She was their third child and only sister to Nels David Johnson and Russell Paul Johnson (deceased). During her youth, Joy worked at the family business, Johnson Poultry and later at Wichita State Bank where her father was president.
After graduating North High, she married Henry Albert Shomber. Early married life included studying history and Bible at Friends University, the birth of son Henry Rolan Shomber and three years later daughter Kaylene Renee Shomber.
In 1962 Joy moved with her family to the Pacific Northwest where she worked for The Boeing Company, the Christian Businessmen’s Association and spent much time making memories with her family in the “high country”.
Most importantly, Joy lived her life for Jesus Christ. Her dedication was evident in the love, graciousness and service she poured out on everyone with whom she came in contact. Her gift of service manifested itself not only in her selflessness to family but her active participation in the churches she attended throughout her life; singing, playing the organ or piano, leading youth groups and Bible studies. Joy’s greatest desire was to learn more of God every day and share her love of Jesus with everyone. Her words of encouragement to “Keep Looking Up” and reminder that “This is the day that the Lord hath made” will last the test of time in the hearts of those whose lives she touched.
Joy’s husband Henry; son Rolan and his wife Lynn; daughter Kaylene and grandchildren: Nathan, Kristen and Brittany invite you to join them in celebrating the life of Joy June Johnson Shomber on Saturday, September 22, 2:00pm at Bear Creek Community Church in Woodinville; 18931 NE 143rd Street.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to World Vision.
