On Tuesday, February 13, 2024, Kumiko Hunsaker peacefully passed away in the presence of family at 79 years old. Kumiko was born on November 7, 1944, and grew up under the leaves of the Momiji (Japanese Maple) and cherry blossom trees of Kyoto, Japan. Kumiko was the oldest child of Hisako and Kazuo.
She attended the private Buddhist Kyoto Girls’ Junior and Senior High School where she excelled in singing and English. During her high school years, Kumiko gained an interest in Christianity. She was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Takano River with her best friend Tomiko Tamaya when she was 17 years old and was a faithful member all her life.
Kumiko pursued her love of the church and study of English and chose to attend college in Price, Utah. She attended the College of Eastern Utah and obtained licensure in Cosmetology. She later moved to Provo, Utah, where she met her eternal sweetheart Harvey Hunsaker at a BYU school dance. After marrying in the Salt Lake City temple for time and all eternity, Kumiko and Harvey moved to Washington state, where they raised 4 children.
Kumiko was a woman of multiple talents with a passion for learning and trying new things. She taught her children Japanese dance and flower arranging, was a skilled seamstress, and incredible cook. She worked at the Redmond Pool as a water aerobics instructor for many years and formed close friendships with the women who attended her classes.
She is survived by her husband, Harvey Hunsaker, children, Pamela Roberts, Scott Hunsaker, Jennifer Secor, and Crystal Wong, and her brothers Toshihiko and Hidehiko. She was preceded in death by her parents Hisako and Kazuo. Kumiko was dearly loved and will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
