Born June 18, 1977, in Phoenix, Michael Joseph Apostol was the beloved son of Ted and Cari Apostol and youngest brother to Peter and Bethany. Michael passed into glory on April 17, 2026, at the age of 48.
Mike attended Paradise Valley Christian elementary school and was a 1995 graduate of Scottsdale Christian Academy, where he was a proud member of the Eagles football team. It was at SCA that Mike met Baily, his Junior Prom date, forever best friend, and wife of 22 years.
Michael attended Arizona State University, his father’s alma mater, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering and Business in 1999--Forks Up! Mike and Baily were married in 2000 and moved to Chandler to live near Mike’s job at Intel while they built their life and family together. With Baily’s strong and steady support at home, Mike returned to ASU to earn an MBA in 2008 while working full time.
Michael was a devoted and involved father. He coached his children's sports teams with the same enthusiasm and intensity he brought to everything else in life — all in, all the time. He was intentional in the way he encouraged Clair, Silas, and Amelie to pursue their passions and cultivated within them a strong faith, a deep sense of integrity and kindness, and a desire for excellence through hard work and discipline, all wrapped up in a fun and whimsical package. For several years Mike shared the stage with his eldest daughter, Clair, in Hale Theater's annual production of A Christmas Carol as well as in cameos at ACT. Michael prioritized making their kids hobbies his hobbies – theatre, soccer, art, singing – to build connection and have time together. His love, faith, encouragement, and sense of fun, playfulness, and adventure are what his children will carry with them always.
Michael’s distinguished 27-year career in the tech industry began at Intel who recruited him right out of college. Mike’s nearly 18 years at Intel were marked by progressive, well-deserved promotions leading to a Director of Software Engineering role, which positioned him well to pursue an exciting new challenge. In 2017, Mike launched the second chapter of his career at Amazon where for nine years, he was a tech and business leader and innovator. Always a curious, technology-obsessed early adopter, Michael was thriving in his most recent position as an Amazon Lead Gen AI Technologist. He had a rare gift for understanding where things were headed before anyone else did. At work, Mike made a lasting and meaningful impact on his colleagues who saw him as a mentor, encourager and someone who genuinely cared about and inspired them.
Everyone who knew Mike knew where his heart was – with his family and his faith - followed by his nearly lifelong passions for Arizona Sports teams, cars, technology, music and leadership. Michael loved Jesus and his faith was foundational in his life - it anchored him and shaped the man and father he was. With reckless optimism, he embraced “the curse” that it was to be an Arizona Cardinals and Phoenix Suns fan which included endless hope, frustration and countless prayers for a championship NFL or NBA season. Mike was also a loyal dog dad. His beloved doodles, Costello and Maezy Mae, brought him great comfort and companionship, especially in Seattle where he relocated for his job in June 2025, just after his 48th birthday.
Michael made every room better with his energy, enthusiasm and sincere interest in others. Mike had a way of using his words and meaningful songs to express love and encouragement to the people he loved. All who have received his thoughtful letters, messages and song shares will treasure them forever.
Michael was cherished by his family and will be profoundly missed by his children, who loved him as “Big As The Sky”: Clair Minturn Apostol, Silas Witman Apostol, and Amelie Graham Apostol; his mother, Carol Ann Apostol; his siblings, Peter Apostol (Stephanie) and Bethany (Apostol) Helmer (Joshua); and his treasured best friend and the mother of their three precious children, Robin Baily (Moore) Apostol, whose love and steadfast support remained a constant in his life.
Always "the fun uncle” with wisdom to impart, Michael was adored by his nieces, Rachel, Anya, and Ally, and nephews, Isaac and Teddy. He will be deeply missed by them and cousins Andy and Ashcon, Uncle Hossein, Aunt Judi, and all his extended family along with everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Michael was preceded in death and welcomed into heaven by his father, Theodore James Apostol (2015); his Auntie Diane (Apostol) Madjid (2014); and his grandparents; Peter Theodore Apostol, Vivian Apostol, Joe Gladney, and Philip and Betty Witman.
