Ryan’s celebration of life today was a beautiful tribute to Ryan and to your family.  You all gave a memorable remembrance to him as a son, brother, friend, relative and student of life.  I won’t forget this day.  Much love and prayers to you all as you navigate the loss of a beloved family member.

Before your family moved to Seattle,  I got Ryan, Keenan, and Nico together and asked them to answer some questions about their friendship. Here are some excerpts from the answers they gave for Nico’s book.  This friendship with Ryan will live on in Nico and Keenan’s heart.

Dear Alyson, Eric, Serena, and Jojo,

I wish to express my deepest condolences to you, my precious friends.  Despite the fact that we haven’t seen each other in years, your family means the world to us. You wouldn’t believe how often we talk about you, or a beautiful memory of our time together in NC pops up,  and we feel so blessed our paths crossed.  The love, support, and joy I felt from you and the Conders when navigating raising our young families together shaped who we are today.   Ryan, Keenan, and Nico were a force on and off the soccer field.  And I treasure the sweet love that Serena, Kendall, Jojo, and Kaylyn shared.  I can still picture Ryan , Keenan, and Nico playing soccer in the yard for hours.  There were intense moments and some arguments but ultimately these 3  buddies would be down on the ground giggling and having the time of their lives.  The sleepovers, the board games, the silly conversations, the homeschooling co-op, and playing on the playground after church every Sunday brought me such joy. Ryan had a zest for life, a never ending sparkle in his beautiful eyes, and a laugh that was contagious.  I loved Ryan and knew he would have a huge impact wherever he went in life.  Forever etched in my memory is the evening our 3 families said goodbye as your family began the journey to Seattle and new adventures.  I felt like a piece of me was being torn out, and I ached that Ryan, Serena and Jojo would not be in Nico and Kaylyn’s lives in the same way.  I remember being sad that I would not get to see Ryan grow into a young man and adult. Reading the comments that others have written here about Ryan makes me wish even more that I had known him in recent years. What a thoughtful, intelligent, capable young man. He clearly continued to be a force and had a huge impact on so many.  He made our family’s life richer, and his legacy will live on in our hearts.  I am praying for each of you and am so thankful you are my forever friends.

Ryan was a big part of my childhood. Really impacted my life in a positive way.

Dear friends,
We are speaking here as a family from far away-Turkey- who had the chance to know and love Ryan.
Ryan wasn’t just our son Ateş’s friend. When he came into our home, we quickly realized we were welcoming someone gentle, thoughtful and deep. When Ryan traveled all the way from the U.S. to visit us, it wasn’t just a trip – it was a connection. Culture, distance, and language didn’t matter. There was warmth. There was
belonging. And those moments became precious memories for us.
Ryan didn’t always say much, but when he looked at you or smiled, you felt something genuine.
And when we saw him for the last time, he said something we will never forget: “ I’ll definitely come visit again.”
Today it hurts deeply to know that we won’t see him walk through our door once more. But somehow, that promise still lives in our hearts. Maybe he couldn’t return in the way we expected-but perhaps, in his own quiet way, Ryan has found a way back.  We believe that kind souls never truly leave.
Today we celebrate a life that may have been short in years, but long in meaning. 
There is one more thing we want to share: Ryan’s name also exists in our culture-“Al Rayyân.” In our tradition, it is the name of a gate of Paradise- one that opens especially for those who endured, who thirsted for peace, who carried quiet burdens with grace.
And isn’t that so fitting?
Perhaps Ryan has found his way to that gate, to a place beyond our pain, filled with light and rest. We choose to believe so.
Ryan, we love you deeply. The quiet strength you carried, the gentle kindness you shared and the bond you created with us will always remain.
Your time here was short, but your impact is lasting.

Dear Harber Family,

I wanted to express my deepest condolences to all of you. My heart is with you all during this incredibly difficult time.

I feel so fortunate to have been friends and teammates with Ryan. He was multi-dimensional in so many great ways. On the field, he was relentless - an absolute gladiator who always led by example. He pushed everyone around him to be better by always showing up, giving his all, and literally forcing you to match his energy. He had a toughness and tenacity that inspired everyone else around him. 

Off the field, Ryan was kind, hilarious, and a great friend. One of my favorite memories is from the summer of 2007, when we stayed at Mike Reeve’s house on Lopez Island. We were just a bunch of kids playing capture the flag, building forts out of driftwood on the beach, playing board games until 4am, and chasing a bunch of poor chickens and sheep. I remember how free we felt that week - there was no pressure, no plans, just a bunch of friends horsing around. On that trip, simply by nature of who he was, Ryan helped show me what it was like to be truly self-confident and unapologetically yourself. That still stands out as one of the happiest times of my life, and Ryan was a huge part of it.

I believe that the way you play soccer is reflective of how you live your life; and Ryan is a perfect example of that. He was an incredibly high quality person, and one of the best teammates I’ve ever had. He left a mark on everyone lucky enough to know him (or unlucky enough to be man-marked by him).

I knew Ryan for the past few years as a colleague. We were all deeply saddened to hear the news of Ryan.  He was a brilliant mind , exceptional engineering talent and most importantly, just a wonderful person and friend.  My heart goes out to all his loved ones and friends.  He will be missed terribly.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Ryan Harber’s passing. Ryan was an extraordinary friend whose warmth, kindness, and vibrant spirit touched everyone around him. In college, when I faced a medical emergency, Ryan didn’t hesitate. He drove me to the hospital, his calm strength turning fear into hope. That was Ryan: always there, always selfless. 

His talent as a gifted musician brought joy and inspiration to so many, filling our lives with beauty through his music. I still remember like it was yesterday those magical nights of acoustic jamming in Arroyo with Ates and  Nico playing guitar and Ryan singing and improvising lyrics, writing multiple songs in a single night.

Ryan’s brilliance extended beyond music; he was a talented athlete whose energy and determination was inspirational on the field and in the gym. Ryan’s sharp intellect made every conversation engaging and meaningful. His loss leaves a void that cannot be filled, but his legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched with his generosity, musicianship, loyalty, and creativity. 

Rest in peace, dear friend. Your music plays on.

I was lucky enough to call Ryan a best friend for 7 years - and it’s hard to put into words the impact he made in my life during that time. 

I’ve met some remarkable humans in this life - but nobody quite like Ryan. 

A true one of a kind - jack of all trades. 

Downright genius, one of the smartest men I’ve ever met. 

Remarkably talented musician..we would spend hours and hours freestyle rapping together. Cooking steaks, then doing it again.

He was my sales engineer at Darktrace and my true Swiss Army knife in the trenches - together we were unstoppable. 

Fitness like none other - he could benchpress more than 95% of the NFL, yet could also run a 4min mile….then a casual weekend solo marathon - just unbelievable determination and will - he could do ANYTHING he set his mind to.

A thrill seeker and wild child. Yet one of the kindest and most genuine souls I’ve ever encountered. 

We explored some amazing parts of the world together - the Grand Canyon, the Taj Mahal, Amritsar, Goa, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and many more. 

Just two weeks ago, we reconnected in LA after over a year apart. It was effortless. He had that rare gift…to make you feel like the only person in the room.

You were one of the greats, Ryan.
 Your spirit, your brilliance, your love - it lives on. <3

I worked with Ryan at Darktrace, and we quickly became close friends. We went to India and Dubai together, and I have some of my fondest memories with him. He was one of the smartest, most driven, and disciplined people I knew. Along with everyone, I share my deepest condolences and sympathy with the entire Harber Family, and Sam Kurpis, who I know he was extremely close with. To say Ryan will be missed is an extreme understatement.

Dear Harber Family,

I feel incredibly fortunate to have known Ryan and to have shared so many meaningful memories with him during a formative time in my life. I still vividly remember meeting him for the first time at Sammamish High School during U-11 tryouts. I was nervous and unsure, and there was Ryan—wearing red tie-dye socks, exuding a confidence I deeply admired.

Another moment that stands out is taking the ACT at Odle Middle School. Though we were in separate rooms, I’ll never forget our brief interaction during the 15-minute break. I asked him, “So, how do you think it’s going?” Without hesitation, Ryan replied, “Pretty good. I’m pretty sure I’ve only gotten one question wrong.” That same quiet confidence, and the results to back it up, was something I always respected about him.

I’m grateful to have been part of that team, which gave me the chance to grow close to young men like Ryan. Whether it was sleepovers at your home, hotel stays across the country, or rainy nights in Preston, Ryan was a constant presence. He will always hold a special place in my heart as a friend I was lucky to know and grow alongside.

Thank you for welcoming me into your lives during such a pivotal time. I will always remember Ryan as someone who helped shape my journey into adulthood. I’m a better man today because of friends like him, and I will forever carry his memory with me—as a great friend, a loyal teammate, and a remarkable person.

I had the privilege of growing up alongside Ryan, sharing countless hours on the soccer field through Eastside FC and Washington State ODP. As captain of our Eastside team, Ryan was the kind of leader you didn’t just respect—you wanted to follow. He brought out the best in everyone around him, not just with his talent, but with his heart.

Off the field, we shared so many moments filled with laughter—the kind that makes your stomach hurt and stays with you for years. His humor, his loyalty, and his ability to make people feel seen and valued left a mark on me that time and distance never erased.

Though we hadn’t spoken in a while, the impact Ryan had on my life is lasting. I carry those memories with deep gratitude and sadness. He will be missed more than words can say.

Rest easy, my Captain.

Words cannot express our sadness for you.

I remember sharing nice moments with Ryan at Serena's wedding and vividly remember as we left the reception of him insisting on a hug over a handshake. It was a strong one and I thought to myself I hope my boys become just like that.

I had recollected that moment numerous times in the months following and will hold on to it dearly.

Our thoughts, feelings, and prayers will be forever with you.
