February 6, 1961 – November 23, 2025
William Edward "Bill" Smeltzer was the warm heart of his family. He passed away unexpectedly on November 23, 2025, yet the enduring legacy of his kindness, strength, humor, and unwavering love will forever remain with all who knew him.
Born in La Porte, Indiana, Bill grew up with a spirit of service that guided him throughout his life. After graduating from high school, he answered the call to serve by joining the United States Air Force where he studied to become an Electrical Engineer and was given assignments across the United States and Europe sparking a lifelong love of travel and cultural discovery.
After Bill’s military service, his professional career led him to California where he lived the majority of his life. During his distinguished career, Bill specialized in avionics and protected satellite communications, working on the B-2 bomber, MILSTAR, and Advanced Extremely High Frequency satellites. His expertise was vital to ensuring our nation’s secure communications, a testament to his commitment to excellence and his dedication to protecting his country.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Bill was known for his patient and calm demeanor. Whether he was tackling a complex technical problem at work or offering a kind ear to someone in need, his steady presence brought comfort to everyone around him. His marriage to his wife, Shu‑Fu Chen, was a partnership built on support and mutual balance they brought to each other’s lives.
Bill was a proud father to his four children—Joshua, Wyatt, Kylie, and Emery—and more recently, he embraced the joy of becoming “Pops” to his grandson, Valen. He often expressed how he wished he had more time with his children, but he made sure they always knew, “I’ll be here if you need me,” a promise he kept in both words and in spirit. His loss leaves a deep void in our hearts.
He is survived by his wife, Shu; his mother, Barbara Vester-Smeltzer; his brothers, James and Robert; his children; and his grandson. He is preceded in death by his father, James Smeltzer Sr., as well as his grandparents, Robert and Florence Vester, and Roscoe and Ruth Smeltzer Sr.
Bill will be remembered for the warmth of his laughter, the steadiness of his guidance, and one of a kind humor that made people smile. Bill's generous spirit will continue to inspire all who knew him.
A Celebration of Life in honor of Bill will be held on December 3, 2025, at 11 a.m. at Lighthouse Memorials & Receptions, White & Day Center, located at 901 Torrance Blvd, Redondo Beach, California.
