Resident of San Mateo, CA
Our dear James R. Fotheringham of San Mateo died Saturday, July 2, 2011 at Mills Hospital in Burlingame, due to complications from pneumonia.
James was a decorated veteran of WW II, serving in the US Army H 383rd Company, 96th Infantry, from March 1943 to January 1946. He earned several medals, including American theater Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific theater Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars, Purple Heart, Victory and Good Conduct Medals.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, James was the only son of James B. and Maud Fotheringham. After high school, James was called to serve his country and did so honorably. After the war, James returned to Ohio and married his sweetheart, Edith Porter of Geneva, Ohio. Settling into married life, James worked as a draftsman at General Electric Company in Cleveland while pursuing his college degree and starting a family.
In 1953, James received his BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Fenn College of Engineering, Cleveland, Ohio. Throughout his career as a Mechanical Engineer, James worked at General Electric Co., Pipe Machinery Co., and Van Dorn Plastics, before working at Caterpillar where he served until his retirement. After retirement, he was called back to work on special projects at Caterpillar as his schedule permitted.
Besides spending time with his family, James enjoyed woodworking and sailing. He designed and built several boats that were used by the family to enjoy the nearby lakes. Fortunately, they were all seaworthy.
When the children were grown and moved away, James and Edith moved to Sun City, Arizona to play golf, garden, and enjoy the warmer weather. When grandson Kainoa was born in 2007, James and Edith moved to California to be closer to him. James is survived by his daughter Wendy F. Penn of Ohio, son James Fotheringham Jr. of California, and grandson Kainoa James Fotheringham of California.
A public Memorial Service for James will be held at Unity Palo Alto Community Church, 3391 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto, CA on September 17, 2011 at 10 AM. A reception will follow at the church.
