Leanne was born on March 28, 1955, in Redlands, California, to Elmer and Shirley Schuil. She was the second of five children. In 1962, her family moved to Dinuba where Leanne thrived in school, both academically and socially. Leanne deeply cherished her Dinuba High School friendships throughout her entire life.
After graduating from Central California Commercial College, Leanne worked for various accounting firms. She was highly respected for her efficiency and professionalism, and her cheerful demeanor made a lasting impression on colleagues and clients alike.
Leanne married her high school sweetheart, Jeremy (Jerry) Martens, on October 4, 1975. Jerry was actively involved in his family’s business, Martens Chevrolet in Reedley. Together, they built a beautiful life in Reedley, welcoming two sons, Jason in 1982 and Kyle in 1985.
From a young age, Leanne placed her faith in Jesus, and her service to Him was a guiding force in her life. She was a devoted member of Reedley Mennonite Brethren Church, where she actively participated in children’s ministries such as teaching Sunday School, leading Pioneer, Girls, helping with Vacation Bible School and assisting with Awana. Her adult ministries included leading an early morning Women’s Bible Study, serving on the leadership team for Women of the Word (WOW), and a member of the Women’s Ministry Committee. However, she will be most fondly remembered for her incredible gift of encouragement—sending hundreds of handwritten notes and letters to friends and family who needed a kind word or reassurance; including crocheting precious blankets for many newborn babies.
In 2014, Leanne’s world was forever changed when Jerry passed away suddenly. Despite her deep grief, she found strength and purpose in loving her two grandchildren, Grace and Carter. She also dedicated herself to supporting Jason in operating Martens Chevrolet and continued to care for others with her generous heart.
Leanne is survived by her loving family: her siblings, Janolyn Visser (Darrell), Michael Schuil (Cynthia), Marc Schuil (Cindy), and Richard Schuil (Necia); her sons, Kyle Martens and Jason Martens (Yvonne); and her cherished grandchildren, Grace and Carter. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Joel Martens, as well as many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Leanne’s legacy of faith, kindness, and encouragement will live on in the countless lives she touched. She will be deeply missed but joyfully remembered.
