I remember meeting Des while spending the first couple of months shadowing Field Managers. The unit was down due to alignment issues where we spent majority of the day working on the carriage. That day Des trained me on carriage maintenance & the hazards associated. Soon after that, Des (& Darwin) became the safety department’s ‘guinea pigs’ when wanting to implement new safety control measures to better protect fellow coworkers. That was Des… always wanting to improve systems or equipment so that no one got hurt. Des, your passion, wisdom, and hospitality will be greatly missed. Thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I have many great memories with Des throughout our 20 plus year working relationship. I'll always remember him for his integrity, honesty and genuine demeanor. I have included a photo of Des and some of the boys at a CN rules class in Toronto many years ago. His presence and leadership will be missed by the many people he touched over the career as a rail tester. My heart goes out to his family and friends through this difficult time. Godspeed my friend.

A great co worker and friend to many,
When I first learned of Des passing I was home in Halifax and I was in complete shook.
I only met Des a handful of times while working at Sperry but he was always a pleasant soul.
He was admired by everyone! Even before I met him I would hear all sorts of great things about him.
He was a very knowledgeable man and will be truly missed. Many looked to him for advice.
Rest easy Des we will take it from here buddy!
My thoughts are with the Fowler/Sperry family at this difficult time.
