Edward passed away peacefully in Regina General Hospital at the age of 93. He was predeceased by his wife Marie, in 2002. Edward is survived by his loving wife Jeanne (married 2003); daughter Loreen (Ken); son Alvin (Wenda); and grandchildren Curtis (Angelina), Kevin (Christine), Chelsea (Greg), and Lindsay (Luis). He will also be missed by his great-grandchildren Keane & Katelynn; by Angelina's children (Montana & Colby), and by the many special members of Jeanne's family, who were welcomed by him as part of his own and held a very dear spot in his heart. Edward came from a family of ten and is survived by his sister Louise (Eric); and brothers Stan (Glenda) of Strasbourg, and Garry (Julie) of Martensville/Puerta Vallarta; and sister Marie (Walter) of Abbotsford; as well as numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews.
Edward bought his first land in 1949: a home quarter that was previously owned by his uncle. He was very handy, with an ability to fix and/or build pretty much anything needed around the farm or house, and we often said his hobby was work. He remained very strong physically and was busy in his yard, home, garden, and maintenance at Jeanne's cabin.
He was a hard-working farmer who called Strasbourg area home most of his life, except for the one winter when he ventured off to Calgary to attend bible school, and met an Okanagan-born young woman, who soon became his wife. He also spent three winters in Edmonton and a couple in London, Ontario, helping his brother Jim with a business venture. After retiring he loved to get out to the farm to help and had his last combine ride just this past fall.
During his lifetime, Edward was active in his church and community, serving on boards and helping out with whatever projects there were. Just a couple of years ago, he was still delivering meals on wheels and being the "taxi" for seniors to Regina. He was an avid curler, spending many hours at the rink and in later years, coaching every curler on T.V. from his armchair. He loved music, sang in many quartets, groups, and choirs and instilled that love in his family. He was gifted with the ability to sit down at the piano and play his favorite songs (never having had a lesson). He also played the guitar.
Edward enjoyed camping and in earlier days, he and Marie would get away in their current RV. He enjoyed travelling and took some bus trips to see other parts of Canada and the U.S., a winter vacation or two, and a trip to Sweden for a curling championship as well as to look up some relatives. He and Jeanne had many winter vacations, some warm-weather trips to the mountains and other locales, and also enjoyed many stays in her cabin at Arlington Beach.
He loved the comfort of his home and his warm fireplace. It was his strong desire to stay there and be independent, and even though a decision had been made just two days prior to his hospital stay to move, he achieved that. Edward loved playing games (and winning) and his home was often the place for friends or family sitting around the table to enjoy a game or two. He had a good sense of humor and liked to tease. (Hospital staff said that the day he came in by ambulance he was laughing and teasing with them and they called him a sweetheart).
Edward had a very strong faith in God and was dedicated to serving Him all his life. In earlier years he devoted a week or two in the summer to go to Fishing Lake Bible Camp and serve there in whatever capacity necessary. He served with the Gideons for many years, driving to schools to distribute Scriptures and in other capacities. He also served with Christian Farmers, as part of the crew completing walking sticks that had the Gospel message attached on cards, and spent time at fairs sharing that message. He and Jeanne still had time together each morning to read the Bible and a devotional and to pray for their loved ones (they had so many they had a list so no one got forgotten). His prayers on our behalf will be missed.
Edward suffered a stroke on Palm Sunday and passed away on Easter weekend, when Christians in the world celebrate the sacrifice that Jesus made so we could have eternal life. He is now able to joyfully partake in that promised life, all struggles past. Memorial donations in honor of Edward can be made to The Gideons, PO Box 3619, Guelph, ON, N1H 7A2. A private graveside service will be held at a later date. Final arrangements have been entrusted to Victoria Avenue Funeral Home in Regina.
