I will strive to be the kind of person Evan was to others. He is my greatest exemplar. Evan would stop traffic for an injured cat and take the cat to a veterinary clinic. Evan was the greatest protector, advocate, friend, and advisor for Shantelle, his wife and my daughter. Evan helped many of Shantelle’s and his friends and family. I recently added a reminder on my phone to pray daily for him. I moved back to Quebec to be closer to my granddaughter, son, and Dr. Robert Bultitude, Ph D Engineer, who is my closest cousin, not just in proximity, retired from the Ottawa government communications, and being married soon. Robert has helped Mike and me with numerous things in my brand new residence in Saint-Hubert. I wish he could meet Evan.

I’m remembering the secret angel, who you were for many, especially for Shantelle and Minuit. Only you would go to The Milky Way, literally and figuratively, for Shantelle. You and Shantelle were soulmates. I pray at Mass foremost for Shantelle and you, among my deceased family members, and will today. As Independence Day, Shantelle said you got it. I’m thinking of a Roy Orbison song, “You Got It.” It would aptly apply to you and Shantelle.

I will attempt to write a condolence and send each paragraph separately:

I just flew into YUL this evening, but have been thing of my  son-in-law, Evan, all day on this, September 28, his birthday. When his wife, my deceased daughter, Shantelle, was seven years old, on my birthday, she brought me a homemade treasure box made from a facial tissue box she’d salvaged from our recycling. I began to read the poem inside and exclaimed, “You wrote this poem!” Then, Shantelle showed me the poem in her dad’s old senior high textbook. I explained to Shantelle the importance of citing and referencing. I will post this poem here because I think it embodied the love Shantelle felt for Evan as her one, great love. Evan truly also was her best friend, mentor in learning, and protector, for whom I will be grateful into eternity.

I often shed tears for Evan, especially listening as Elvis Presley sang to his deceased parents, “I’ll remember you / Long after this endless summer is gone…” [(YouTube, Elvis Presley, I’ll Remember You (Aloha from Hawaii, May 29, 2009)].

I fly between YUL and YYZ and am anticipating visiting family in August who recently relocated in retiring/working near LFT. They are enjoying all the Cajun hospitality and caring, which remind me of Evan.

Maïa and I discuss poetry and novels. I also will remember Evan as a person of great character and strength, and as an exceptionally excellent writer, from whom I learned. I think of Evan “Dearly” (Atwood, Margaret, Penguin Random House, McCLELLAND & STEWART, Canada, 2020).

When I’m on the tarmac, looking out the window, and hear the mighty engines roar, I try to restrain the tears for Evan.

I wish Evan were here for his 50th birthday today. Only the good die young. I will always be grateful to Evan for being the one great love for his wife, Shantelle.

Evan’s wife and my deceased daughter, Shantelle, are still daily in my thoughts and prayers and especially today on the 8th anniversary of Evan’s death. It was nice to see all the pictures on the Internet, some of which were new to me. Thank you again to Gerard Chouest and Brenda Spaulding for everything they did to help Evan and Shantelle.

We were on the same hockey team in high school and had hung out and partied together when we were in our late teens.  Last I remember me and some friends visited Victoria where he had moved in 1989 if memory serves.  He was a good friend then and was someone we looked up to.

Anyways, heard a few years ago he had passed and went to the cemetery in 2018 wanting to pay respects but could not find him.   Not sure why but was thinking about that today.  If someone can kindly let me know which part he’s in, I’d like to visit again in the Spring.  Thanks.

I am very saddened by this news. I hope that comfort can come soon, but please take care of  yourselves.

As I am finally back in Camrose and have the opportunity to write on this website for Evan provided by Evan's dad, Gerard, and Brenda, Evan's stepmother.   I, once again, struggle with the tears and pain related to Evan's passing.  Evan was like a son to Henry and me and we will be forever grateful to Evan for being the one great love to our daughter Shantelle.  I was only able to arrive in Regina after the teaching year ended, but felt fortunate to continue to experience and witness the profound love that Shantelle and Evan had for each other.  As Shantelle, barely slept from running ceaselessly up and down the stairs throughout the days and nights helping Evan, who continued to fight the cancer so bravely, I felt the strong bond they had.  Shantelle continued to say, as she had over the last 2 years since Evan was diagnosed with cancer, that she wanted to help Evan in any way possible.   I was not surprised when Shantelle came crying down the stairs to repeat to me that Evan compared Shantelle to his wonderful, paternal grandmother, saying, “Shantelle, you're just like Mama.”  I realized long ago that Shantelle was also like the women in my maternal extended family, who would care for a sick person.  
We were very grateful to Gerard, who continued, as he always had, helping to support Shantelle and Evan in the last days of Evan's life.  It was apparent, even in the last hours, that Evan was responding to Gerard's presence.  For Shantelle, Gerard, Eden, and me, I'm sure it was the most difficult day of our lives, when we saw the devastating CT scans that clearly showed the massive cancer in Evan's lungs and pressing on his esophagus, such that we were told by the doctors that Evan's ventilating tube needed to be removed while he could receive pain medication to paralyze Evan.  That way, we were advised, he would not experience a very painful death hours later.  I was glad that I got a final chance to thank Evan for taking such good care of Shantelle and helping Shantelle to overcome a very difficult time in her life when she first met Evan.  I was reminded by the phone call from Shantelle last August, when Gerard, Brenda, and Hanna helped Evan and Shantelle to stay at their house in Toronto.  One day, Evan, weak and sick from receiving radiation treatments, was at the Princess Margaret Hospital with Shantelle, when she bumped her leg accidentally.  Shantelle said that Evan carried her out of the hospital to the car.  It seemed indicative of how they always cared for one another and how Evan continued to fight so strongly for his life, not only for himself and everyone, but, I know, especially for Shantelle.
I wanted to also thank Gerard, Brenda, and Hannah for their generous support and help throughout the funeral in Regina and the burial in Toronto.  While they struggled to deal with their own grief for Evan and their dog, Patterson, who died 2 days after Evan's passing, they reached out to help Shantelle and me through this very difficult time.  Shantelle, Henry, and I will be forever grateful to them.  I was not surprised, either, in knowing Gerard, Brenda, and Hanna, by the associates in Gerard's law firm and Gerard and Brenda's friends who were so wonderful during this difficult time.  Many of their friends and family who came to the funeral and burial were very kind and supportive.  Because Gerard's law associates could not attend the funeral with their flight cancelled during the Toronto storm, their restaurant dinner for Gerard and Brenda's family and presence at the burial was very heartfelt .  In Evan's memory, my Auntie Alice; cousin Tom; Shantelle's brother Michael; Shantelle and Evan's niece, Maia, and Maia's mother, Marie-Christine; Henry; and I are making a donation to the Regina Food Bank, where Evan, even in the last months of his life, continued to generously take food in the wonderful, caring way in which he always tried to help others.

Evan was strong, graceful, insightful, beautiful, nurturing, wonderful, determined, loyal, caring, considerate, articulate, intelligent, creative, interesting, loving, sincere, handsome, and had a sense of humor. He loved his friends, family, pets, spouse, and loved life. Rest in peace my

I remember the first time I met Evan. He, Eden, and Jumper were interviewing me as a potential roommate.
Evan introduced me to hockey and I went to my first game to watch him play. Evan and I argued about movies. As he grew, we argued more. He demonstrated his insight and sophistication.
