Jacob (Jake) Anthony Volk, born April 18, 1928, died peacefully, attended by family, on Friday, July 20, 2018 at the Pasqua Hospital in Regina. He is predeceased by his wife Mary (nee Kaufman), parents John and Elizabeth (Herle) Volk, brothers Nick and George, and sister Lena. He is survived by brothers John, Tony and Isidore, sisters Anne (Mitzel) and Audrey (Wilson), wife Lois (Frederiksen), children Maureen (Bruce Watson), Lois (Bill Dickson), Koren (Rick Dean), Marcella Sholdice (John), Glen (Lisa Anderson), Ann (Kevin Yaromich) and Coleen (Jean Pierre Poirier), and 12 adoring and adorable grandchildren.
Jake was born and raised on a farm near Revenue, Saskatchewan. After receiving his Bachelor of Education from the University of Saskatchewan, he taught at Scott, where he met and married Mary. His passion for education led to a long career in the Saskatchewan education system. He served as a school principal in Denzil, a Superintendent in Kerrobert, a Regional Superintendent in Swift Current, and a Director in the Department of Education in Regina. He completed his career as the Executive Director of the Saskatchewan Schools Trustees Association (SSTA). In the midst of that, he found time to complete a master's degree from the University of Winnipeg. Jake was also passionate about music. From playing saxophone with the Rainbow Ramblers dance band and conducting the church choir in Denzil, to directing the barbershop chorus in Swift Current, to honing his skills on the accordion in his retirement, Jake was a natural musician. Music could bring him to tears the way few things could. It also brought him lasting friendships, as did his love of square dancing, which led to his second marriage, to Lois, after Mary's death. He found joy in his family, especially in many evenings of cards and board games. He took great pride in his children's accomplishments and passed on to each of them the importance of education, music, family, generosity and integrity. Jake was a good man, with a strong moral fibre and strong ties to the church, not least through his long involvement with the the Knights of Columbus, including service as State Deputy. There is no doubt that he is reading this from heaven, free of the burdens of Parkinson’s and heart disease. The world will be a better place because of his influence on all of those around him, including his family who will miss him deeply. The family would like to extend thanks to the doctors and nurses at the Pasqua Hospital for their kindness and compassion to Jake and his family members in his final hours, and heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff at College Park II for the outstanding care and friendship they gave him in the last few years of his life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Campion College at the University of Regina (Volk Memorial Fund), or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
