It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing Joyce Evelyn Prettyshield (Zitcunna Zi Nowah Wiyan) “Yellow Bird Singing Woman” on April 27, 2021, at the age of 77. Joyce was a kind spirit who enjoyed meeting new people and loved being around her family, relatives, and friends.
Joyce was born on November 21, 1943, on Cega’kin First Nation to parents Estella (O’Watch) and Edward Prettyshield. As a child, Joyce grew up surrounded by her siblings and relatives enjoying the outdoors and all the adventures it had to offer. She was the daughter of Minister and attended church every Sunday while still actively participating in her Nakota traditional life. Joyce was a residential school survivor and despite all she endured, she still managed to greet everyone with a warm welcoming smile. Joyce continued to practice her faith and attended as many First Nation events as she was able. She was close to all her family and relatives and always welcomed them into her home without hesitation.
Joyce is predeceased by her parents Edward and Estella (O’Watch) Prettyshield. Her children, Judy and Richard. Her Siblings Raymond, Gerald, Victor, Bernard, Victoria, Theresa, and Barbara. Her late husband, Glen Ryder. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Gwenda (grandchildren: Laura, Michelle, Brittany, Tiffany and numerous great grandchildren), Howie (grandchildren: Hann, Hillary, and Kaige), April (father Lorne Mossip), and grandson Max (Richard). She is also survived by her siblings Max (Wilma), Carl (Hilda), Gladys, and Marie; and many nieces, nephews and relatives.
The Family would like to extend a special thank you to all the courageous staff for their support and Joyce’s care while she bravely battled the virus at the Regina General Hospital, the Pasqua Hospital, and the Wascana Rehabilitation Centre for her care afterwards. Additionally, the family would like to thank Lee Funeral Home for their assistance and compassion during this difficult time.
Joyce will be laid to rest at Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery on Thursday, May 6, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. Her funeral service will be held at Lee Funeral Home 3101 Dewdney Avenue on Thursday, May 6, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. Due to the restrictions surrounding the virus, service will be by invite only.
