It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Mary Linda (Nee Wesaquate) Gordon, born on March 21, 1953. She left this world peacefully on March 1, 2013 surrounded by family. Predeceased by father Ronald Wesaquate, Sisters Myrna (Wesaquate) Weenie and Lorraine Wesaquate, she leaves to celebrate her life with fond memories; her mother Beatrice Wesaquate, husband of 41 years, Hubert Gordon, Daughters, Lynette (Edward), Leslie (Corey), Jessica, Maria (Justin). Kokum to 18 and Chapan to 6, Siblings; Dennis (Mary) Wesaquate,Clifford (Pauline) Wesaquate, Valerie, Doris (Bernard) Audrey(Len), Jason (Kathy), Angela (Clint) Kakum, and much loved nieces, nephews and their children that she took as her own. Her passion was educating, and was loved by many of her students as she had a great impact on everyone she met and the communities that she worked in such as, Muskowekwan, Muscowpetung, Pasqua, Carry the Kettle, White Bear, OceanMan and Piapot Schools. She felt honored each time her former students would approach her to show their appreciation and love. Her mind was filled with educating and she would read and research more knowledge to pass on, with a focus on indigenous studies, treaties and pride of history of who you are, she gave students the sense that they can do anything. She shared her knowledge and inspired many to keep pushing ahead no matter what obstacles or challenges lay ahead. She made many sacrifices for her students and never needed or wanted acknowledgement. From her years before teaching she worked in a variety of organizations; Saskatchewan Indian Federated College, New Dawn Valley Centre and enjoyed her time and the fellow students while she was at the Indian Teacher Education Program, in which she loved to share her many favorite memories. She challenged injustices and was never afraid to be vocal about it, she was a part of much activism in her community and supported activities wherever there was injustice. Her legacy will live on through her teachings, values and memories that she shared with her family for it was through her value of humour that she taught all that, “Life isn’t so tough that we can’t find humour in it”. She was very proud of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, She raised her children to be confident and not be afraid to speak up when you need to. If there is something you don’t like, change it and never settle for anything less - persevere. Her intelligence and strength was shown to all who she met.
