May 30, 1934-April 24, 2016.
“Oh I have slipped the surly bonds of earth, and danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth of sun-split clouds, and done a hundred things you have not dreamed of”
Predeceased by his parents Wagar and May McDermott Lyons, he is survived by his beloved wife Nancy (Lund), daughters Sharon Lyons and Susan Lyons, his son-in-law and friend Mark Goossens, his grandchildren who he helped raise, Stephanie Hanover (Chris Kambeitz and new baby Andy) of Weyburn, Cameron Hanover (Amber Dalton, Chris, Alex and Emily Hanover and Aida Dalton) of Regina, Kara Hanover (Collin Germann) of Squamish BC, and Vince and Mathew Vancha of Regina. Terry is also survived by his brothers Harold (Pat) and Andy (Donna), his sisters-in-law Cathy (late Ken), Marilyn (late Don) all of Ontario, and Donna Lund (late Bill) of Saskatoon, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Terry was able to attend a McDermott/Lyons family reunion in Cobourg ON last July. Terry was a fighter/interceptor pilot and air weapons controller who flew on squadron and taught many others to fly in Canada, and as part of Canada’s assistance to the US during the Vietnam War from 1968-1970. He also had Norwegian, Danish, and Iranian students. Terry flew Harvards, CF-100s, Beechcraft, Expediters, a single-engine Otter, T-33s, T-38s, Tutors and a Huey. He also flew a Lear Jet, a Commander, and had several interesting planning and operational jobs, including the BOpsO at CFS LaMacaza which housed nuclear tipped Bomarc missiles, and at Moose Jaw, where he often flew with the Snowbirds (#13), and in Cheyenne Mountain at Colorado Springs. Terry was Deputy CEO of New Careers Corp and CEO of the Corps of Commissionaires and only recently retired from its Board. Terry was one of the few who sat in the cockpit of an Avro Arrow. Terry loved to socialize and was always on time for parties and meetings, attending many of both. He was always on a committee for something or transcribing minutes. He was the king of the bad pun and the double entendre. He told us we could do anything, and that everyone was equal. He was Director and Past President of the 600 Wing Royal Canadian Air Force Association, also Chairman of the Saskatchewan War Memorial Committee and a member of the Royal United Services Institute of Regina, the Royal Canadian Legion, the Saskatchewan Aviation Council and the 431 Air Demonstration Squadron’s Society of Honorary Snowbirds. From May 1998 through June 2000, he also served in the role of Honorary Colonel of Number 2 Canadian Forces Flying Training School. In September 2013, Terry coordinated the addition of Saskatchewan’s war dead names to the Afghanistan plaque onto the Saskatchewan War Memorial at the Battle of Britain public remembrance ceremony, facilitated annually by Terry and the 600 Wing RCAF group. He also assisted in organizing the restoration of the Memorial in time for Regina’s First World War centennial event in August, 2014. Terry and Nancy loved to get away in the winter, traveling to Maui, Honolulu with the kids, Fort Myers Beach, Key West, Port Aransas, several cruises and California. He had the right stuff. Terry will be missed by many friends and acquaintances, especially close friends Cliff and Fran Walker. A reception will be held at a later date and a notice will be provided. Per Ardua et Astra.
