Virginia Gheorghiu (nee Nibi), age 86, died peacefully with her granddaughter by her side on October 12, 2019. Gina, as she was known to friends and family, was born in 1933 in Nastradin, Bulgaria, which was part of Romania. She was raised by her loving adoptive parents in Bucharest, Romania, where she was also married, and raised her two daughters. Sponsored by her husband, Dumitru, Gina and her daughters immigrated to Canada in 1984. Gina was a survivor of the communist regime in Romania, and was imprisoned for political protest at the age of 17. Her experiences of oppression drove Gina to stand up for freedom and fairness. An exceptional matriarch, Gina balanced the values of perseverance and independence instilled in her through her life with unbridled love and nurturing for her children and grandchildren. Gina will be lovingly missed by her daughters, Anda (Paul), Oana (Chris); grandchildren, Violeta (Chad), Julia, Mario (Tiffany), Calista, Tristan, and Cassia; brother, Iuliu; sister, Florica; sisters-in-law, Elena and Gina; nephew Sandu (Doina); and extended family and friends in Romania and Canada. She was predeceased by her husband Dumitru; parents Iancu and Steluta; adoptive parents Gogu and Verga; and sister Sina. Gina’s family would like to thank the congregations of St. George Orthodox Church and St. Nicholas Romanian Orthodox Church, as well as the teams at Home Care Nursing, Allan Blair Cancer Centre, RGH 6F, Palliative Unit 3A, and Regina Wascana Grace Hospice. You all cared for our beloved Gina like she was your own family. Thank you. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Regina Wascana Grace Hospice, St. George Orthodox Church, St. Nicholas Romanian Orthodox Church, or Amnesty International. Wake and Prayers will be held at Victoria Avenue Funeral Home, 2080 Victoria Avenue East in Regina, SK on Wednesday, October 16, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. The Funeral Service will be held at Victoria Avenue Funeral Home on Thursday, October 17, 2019 at 10:00 a.m., followed by an Interment at Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery, 815 Assiniboine Avenue East in Regina, SK, and a reception at Victoria Avenue Funeral Home.
