It is with great sorrow that we share the news that Winnifred (Winnie) Horne of Dilke, Saskatchewan passed away on October 14th, 2016 at the age of 94. She will be dearly missed by her children Laura Bekkatla (Gilbert), Larry Horne & Ken Horne, her grandchildren Ian Bakkatla (Carmen), Patty Bekkatla, Christina Mawhinney (Stephen), Curtis Horne (Melissa), Meredith Horne, Michelle Dueck (Greg), Steven Tippe, Moray Horne (Adriana), Misty Cooper (Reece), Myles Horne (Jessie), Tanya Todosichuk (Dwayne), Jubie Lark (Rita) and Devin Horne (Candice), as well as many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Winnie was born in Sifton, near Dauphin Manatoba, youngest of 7 children in the Mitchell family, on December 11, 1921. During her school days, she enjoyed tap dancing, archery, gymnastics, and was an avid poet. After finishing the 7th grade Winnie worked in Dauphin as a waitress and then as a housekeeper for a couple. Winnie married Albert Horne on June 8th, 1949, and moved to Dilke, Saskatchewan where they began their lives together raising children, livestock, and crops.
Winnie was an active member of Dilke United Church, UCW, and a longtime member of the Red Cross helping improve the lives of people not only in Saskatchewan but around the world. She took great pride in her flower garden by the house that was always filled with blooming roses, irises, peonies, and lilies of every colour. Her garden was always overflowing with fresh vegetables and berries, which not only fed their family but also fed many families in the Dilke area. She loved music, both gospel and old time country. Winnie loved animals but most of all, she loved her family.
Winnie is preceded by husband Albert, and grandson Gilbert Lawence.
A celebration of Winnie’s life will be held at Lee Funeral Home, 3101 Dewdney Avenue in Regina on Saturday, October 29th at 2:00 pm. Those so wishing to make a donation in Winnie’s name are encouraged to do so to the charity of their own choice.
