George Jefferson Meng was born February 10th, 1930 in Mineola, NY and raised in Reading, PA. He graduated from Reading Sr. High, Class of 1947. George attended the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a Bachelor of Sciences in Economics in 1951 and met his wife Charlotte Swan Anderson, class of 1952. George and Charlotte married in 1954 and have lived in Jeffersonville and Audubon, PA since.
George was an active member of Christ Church, U.C.C., Norristown, PA. He served as President of Consistory for twenty years and served in multiple other leadership roles over a period of fifty years. He was also active in Scouting, serving as Scoutmaster and District Chairman. In 2011, he celebrated his 50th anniversary in Norristown Lodge No. 620 of Free and Accepted Masons.
George will be remembered for his entrepreneurial spirit and successful business career. He started out at Curtis Publishing Company on Independence Square in Philadelphia in 1951. In 1955, George moved on to a position as an industrial engineer with Alan Wood Steel Company, where he was promoted to Foreman in 1958. In 1963, George changed jobs again, this time with National Rolling Mills, Inc., where he was the General Manager of Manufacturing. In 1970, he joined the international consulting group, Hay Associated. In 1978, he founded the management consulting firm Webber, Meng, Sahl & Co. from which he retired in 1993.
George’s other interests were centered in Ocean City, NJ where he and his family owned and operated Beachside Snacks, a fast food, sundry retail, parking lot, and beach equipment rental business, for 34 years. George and his family were also involved in real estate development and vacation rentals. These pursuits brought together four generations of family and friends, and George will live on in countless “Beachside” memories and stories.
George is survived by his wife of 66 years, Charlotte Anderson Meng. Charlotte was an elementary school principal in the Norristown Area School District (NASD) for 21 years. After retirement, she served on the NASD Board of School Directors for ten years and served as President for two years.
George is also survived by three children: George Jonathan Meng and his wife Carol, residing in Silverthorne, CO, Robert Frank Meng and his wife Constance, of Ocean City, NJ, and Elizabeth Meng Ramsey and her husband Scott, of Royersford, PA, seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. George is pre-deceased by two sisters, Lois Ostermayer and Ruth Devine.
Burial arrangements have been entrusted to the staff of Auman's Inc. Funeral Home, Reiffton. Graveside committal at Forest Hills Memorial Park will be private.
