On May 9, 2018 we lost our beloved mother Carmelita (Mely) Algarme Batayola aged 75 after a fifteen-month battle with endometrial cancer. She was born Carmelita Algarme on April 22, 1943 in Plaridel, Bulacan, Philippines to Dominador Algarme and Hermogena de Jesus. Due to a delay in getting her birth registered, her legal birthday was May 7, 1943, but she always wanted to celebrate on her real birthday.
Mely was the oldest of five children (Carmelita, Trinidad, Clarita, Arsenia, and Eufemio) from the marriage of Dominador and Hermogena. Prior to the marriage with Hermogena, Dominador had been a widower from a marriage to Trinidad Cruz and had three sons (Carlos, Ramon, and Dominador Junior) from that marriage.
She graduated from the Philippines College of Commerce in 1961 with an A.C. S and then from the University of the East in Manila, Philippines in 1963 with the degree of Bachelor of Business Administration, major in accounting. Mely became a Certified Public Accountant in the Philippines in1967. After becoming a CPA, Mely immigrated to the United States in 1968 and settled in Seattle, WA. In 1969 she was introduced to her future husband, Evaristo (Eddie) Villanueva Batayola by a common friend. They married on July 31, 1971 in Seattle, WA and had two sons, Charles Edward and Edgar Conrad. In 1973 they bought their first home in Beacon Hill then moved to Fairwood in 1978.
Mely was a professional woman and working mom at a time when that was not very common. She worked as a bookkeeper and an accountant in the Philippines for several years before immigrating and then continued as a CPA in the United States. In 2014 she retired from the King County Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention as a Business and Finance Officer after 32 years of service.
Family was always very important to her and she sponsored her parents and three of her siblings to immigrate to the United States. They had worked hard to get her an education and she felt helping them to come to the United States to be with her was the best way to show her appreciation.
She always valued education and made sure to support both of her sons through college. Once they were done, she and Eddie loved cruising the world together, making it to every continent. They were always going on a cruise or planning their next one.
Mely was a fantastic cook and often showed her love by cooking traditional Filipino cuisine. Some of her specialties were pancit, adobo, lumpia, and kare kare. It was always a treat to get her home cooking.
She is preceded in death by her parents Dominador and Hermogena Algarme, brothers Carlos and Dominador Junior Algarme, sister Trinidad Algarme, nephew Ronelio Algarme, and husband Evaristo Batayola. She is survived by her two sons Charles and Edgar Batayola, her daughter-in law Christine Batayola, and three grandchildren Donald, James, and Lily Batayola. She is also survived by two brothers Ramon and Eufemio Algarme and two sisters Clarita Villasenor and Arsenia Algarme.
