Jerry Mack Barrett died February 13, 2019. Sadly, aggressive lung cancer was discovered soon after his 80th birthday. Jerry was born January 28, 1939 in Tulia, Swisher County, Texas to Lois Saunders and John W. Barrett. He was the oldest of three boys. During Jerry’s childhood, he lived in northwest Texas; Hawthorn, California; Grants Pass and Prineville, Oregon; then back to living on farms near San Angelo, Texas and then near his birthplace, Tulia, Texas. He graduated from Kress High School in 1956. He enrolled in Texas Tech University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics in 1961. After college, Jerry was hired by The Boeing Co. as a computer programmer and moved from Texas to the Seattle area in 1962 with his first wife, Mary Alice, and his two young children. He loved his job and held it for 33 years, retiring in 1995. He enjoyed the Pacific Northwest and experienced many backpacking trips on the Pacific Coast and the mountain ranges including the Olympics and Cascades. Bicycling was added to his interests in the early ‘70’s, which included day rides, group trips, and commuting to work almost every day. He was an active member of the Boeing Employees Bicycle Club, The Cascade Bicycle Club, and The Mountaineers.
Jerry and his second wife, Barbara, were married in 1983. After retirement Jerry and Barbara entered the active senior world of organized softball and volleyball in the greater Seattle area. When he was physically unable to play volleyball anymore he became a referee for the senior volleyball league and loved that role. Bicycle trips were also squeezed into the activities, seeing several parts of the country and Canada.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Randy.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara, of almost 36 years; two brothers, Stanley Barrett and Bryan David Barrett; his daughter, Rhonda Barrett; a niece and a nephew; stepsons Mike, Mitch, and Mark Hagens; four step grandchildren, and one step great grandson.
