Larry played all sports including varsity basketball in High School and Central Washington University. After 2 years of college, Larry volunteered for the Army and became a paratrooper/medic stationed in Germany. After he returned to the Seattle area he met and married Miss Sharon Sibillia, and completed his degree in Education. In 1961 he was hired by the Issaquah School District and began teaching at May Valley Elementary School.
He taught for 6 years and because of his concern for kids, he was one of the main organizers and first President of 5 Star Athletic Club. He also spearheaded a successful campaign to raise enough tax dollars to build Coalfield Park. Both the club and park serve kids today. Larry was a perfect example of how one person can make a difference. Attending classes in the evenings and summers, Larry earned his Masters of Education Degree at Seattle University and became Principal of May Valley School in 1967. He later moved to a school that was under construction for the first year of his administration. He was instrumental in naming the campus Apollo Elementary School. His last 11 years were spent as Principal of Maywood Middle School. In his letter of resignation Larry wrote, "I have been very fortunate to have worked with outstanding people not only in the school setting but also within the communities of Issaquah and Renton. How more fortunate could anyone be than to work with young people for 30 years of his life and enjoy it as much as I have."
After retirement Larry joined his wife at Renton East Dairy Queen that they owned. He helped with the day to day operation, took care of the books and golfed at least twice a week. In his private life, Larry was a family man who led by example and was loved and cherished by his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Sharon. His son, Bart, wife Vicki and three sons, Dillon, Charlie and Tony. His son, Bret and his two daughters Savanna and Shanna, husband Brian. His daughter, Beth and her two sons Gino and Nick. Larry is also survived by two sisters, Marilyn VanInwegen and Cathy Welker, husband Lowell, extended family, friends and associates. They were all important to him and he loved them.
