Leonard was born on August 4, 1939, in Watkins, Minnesota, to Bill and Helen Johnston. In 1943, he moved with his family to Washington State, where he would build a life rooted in family, friendship, and community. He graduated from Renton High School in 1957 and proudly enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at the age of 17. After serving two years in the Marines, Leonard returned home to Renton, where he soon met the love of his life, Linda Olson. The two were married in 1960 at Saint Anthony’s in Renton and went on to share a devoted marriage filled with love, laughter, and adventure.
Together, Leonard and Linda welcomed three children: Kim, Mark, and Lori. Leonard dedicated 33 years of service to Boeing before retiring in 1994.
Leonard lived life with enthusiasm and curiosity. He had a lifelong passion for horse racing, owning racehorses and spending countless Friday nights at the track with his dear friend Mike O’Harra. Never one to shy away from adventure, Leonard went skydiving at the ages of 75, 76, and again at 85, proving that age was never a limit to living fully.
Above all else, Leonard’s greatest joy came from his family. He loved coaching and cheering on his children and grandchildren in countless sports and activities over the years. Through his coaching, mentorship, encouragement, and steady presence, Leonard touched the lives of many young people and left a lasting impact that will continue for generations.
In retirement, Leonard and Linda enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Canada, spending winters in Arizona, attending horse races, playing card games, and golfing together.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Helen Johnston; his brothers, Donald and Arden; his sisters, Barbara and Bonnie and niece Diane.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 66 years, Linda; his sister, Diane; his children, Kim (Mike), Mark (Becca), and Lori (Kyle); his seven grandchildren, Valerie, Miranda, RJ, Carson, Zach, Bryce, and Sammi; his four great-grandsons; and many cherished nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
Leonard’s legacy of love, mentorship, humor, and adventure will live on in all who knew him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
