Lily Guevara

March 16, 1940November 14, 2021

Lily Guevara passed away at her home on November 14, 2021, in Renton, Washington, at the age of 81.

Lily, better known as “Mama Lil”, was born in Manor, Texas, to Mr. & Mrs. Matias Correa. She grew up in Toppenish, Washington, with her one brother and two sisters. There she met her husband, Samuel Guevara, and they married on July 5, 1958 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church. After they were married, Lily and Sam moved to Kent, Washington.

Lily and Sam were very special people and after it was determined they couldn’t have their own children, they adopted Tina, Robert, and Christina and raised them as their own. Much to their surprise, after 22 years of marriage, they were blessed with a pregnancy and the birth of Elizabeth.

Anyone who met Lily would quickly learn and witness that she was a devoted and committed wife and mother. She knew that her calling in life was to love and care for people. Soon after adopting Tina and Robert, Lily extended this love and caring to children of other families. In her 20+ years of doing daycare, “Mama Lil” as she was affectionately known, provided a nurturing and engaging environment for all who came under her care. She continually looked for ways to help the kids grow emotionally and educationally. She challenged them to be responsible for themselves, to learn how to tie their shoes, to wipe their noses, and to get up and brush off the dirt when they fell. She taught them how to cook and bake. They made playdough and tamales and learned how to roll out homemade tortillas; they learned how to garden and the importance of giving back to Mother Earth; she taught them the fun of getting dirty in the mud and the beauty of having music in their hearts. Lily made such an impact on the those she cared for, that many of those children came back to Lily as adults to have her care for their children. This is a true testament to the amazing woman that Lily was and would always be.

Lily was also very committed to her faith and church. She continued to extend her love and care while working for St. Anthony’s Parish (Renton, WA) as a housekeeper and cook for the clergy. They too experienced the pleasure of indulging in Lily’s amazing Mexican cooking.

Last, and certainly not least, Lily was finally able to extend her love and caring with the experience and joy of being a grandmother. She was first blessed with her grandson, Hunter, and then her granddaughter, Hayden. She shared her passion and joy of cooking, baking and gardening with them too. She taught them the phrase, “What happens at Grandma’s, stays at Grandma’s”. About six years ago, Lily was blessed again with grandson, Everest, and three years after, with Maverick. Lily gave everything she had to her grandchildren. They were her pride and joy.

Lily is survived by her son, Robert, and three daughters, Tina, Christina Longfellow (Happy), and Elizabeth Guterson (Taylor); four grandchildren, Hunter and Hayden Longfellow, and Everest and Maverick Guterson; and sister, Marcelina (Lupe) Martinez. Lily was preceded in death by her parents, Matias and Luz Correa; her brother, Richard Correa and sister, Alice Rebollosa.
