Lorie (Walleston) McMasters of Burien, Washington, passed away peacefully on September 27th 2026, with family by her side. Lorie was born in Portland, Oregon and raised in Pasco, Washington, before ultimately making her home in Burien, Washington. A liberal activist in the 1970s, a fiercely independent single mother and a lifelong adventurer, Lorie lived with curiosity, courage and passion. Over the years, she worked as a veterinary technician, a bus driver for the Hebrew Academy, a waitress at Sun Mountain Lodge and the owner of a daycare. She was never afraid to reinvent herself and eventually built a distinguished career in the credit union movement, beginning at BECU as a customer service representative and rising to become head of the records department. Lorie was also a developmental educator, helping expand the reach of credit unions in underserved communities.
Lorie traveled the world, embraced new experiences and never stopped learning. She had a remarkable ability to connect with people and make them feel seen, regardless of their circumstances or position in life. Authentic, brave and optimistic, she lived life on her own terms and encouraged those she loved to do the same. She made people feel special.
She loved animals of every kind, painting rocks, tending her garden and, above all, music. From the Beatles to Fleetwood Mac to Ozzy Osbourne, she had a deep connection with music of all genres. Lorie was such a funny, goofy person and could strike up a conversation with anyone, and often would.
Lorie is survived by her sisters, Terri Simon and Suzie Alexander; daughters Lisa McMasters and Chelsea (Michael) Doran; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She is also lovingly remembered by her nieces and nephews, her cousins and their families, and the many friends and colleagues who became family over the years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Eva and Irving Walleston.
She will be deeply missed and forever loved.
