She was born to William and Margaret Carver in Arborfield, Saskatchewan, Canada on the Carver farm. Lyla was the 8th of 9 children and is survived by her younger brother, Stanley (Sietske) Carver of Calgary, AB., her children, John (Melinda) Brown, Darlene (Russell) Johnson, Laurie (Mark) Weeks, H. Kenneth (Lisa) Brown Jr, and Margaret Brown, 10 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren, and dear friend Richard Woods.
Lyla moved to Seattle, Washington in 1956 and later moved to Renton and finally to Lake Sawyer in Black Diamond Washington.
At under 5-1/2 feet tall, you would only underestimate Lyla at your own peril. While raising 5 kids, Lyla managed to build 3 homes participating in every aspect of construction. From manually clearing trees and brush, to home design, excavation, foundation work, framing, finish work, and decorating. Lyla was a believer in hard work and if you worked with her, you had better be a believer too! She was very familiar with a shovel, level, and hammer. Lyla could use a circular saw as well as anyone. She was also an avid gardener, canner, knitter, and reader . . . always active and never afraid of tackling a project, even pressure washing the roof on her two story home while in her 70’s!
Lyla obtained her Cosmetologist license in 1983 and took great joy in owning and operating Lyla's Family Hair Care on Lake Sawyer. Lyla loved living on the lake and took great pleasure in watching the eagles fly over and seeing the ducks paddle for cover until the eagle left. She loved watching the fish jump and the serenity that came with the surroundings.
Lyla loved to bowl, and was a regular at Secoma Lanes. Lyla had a passion for softball, was active for many years on Auburn Senior team. She loved her Seahawks and Mariners. She also loved going to the Casino!
Later in life Lyla supported a variety of community organizations and raised money for noble causes. Lyla was a member of Covington Lions Club. Lyla was also a member and President of Black Diamond Eagles, Ladies Auxiliary. Lyla was honored as 2002 Citizen of the Year for City of Black Diamond. Lyla was also Grand Marshall for the 2003 Black Diamond Labor Day Parade for her involvement fundraising for Juvenile Diabetes, Guide Dogs for the Blind, and other charitable entities.
Lyla liked to keep busy. Her children were a highlight in her life. We and the rest of her friends and family will miss her very much.
A memorial service will be planned when COVID related travel and gathering restrictions are lifted. Interment is at Greenwood Memorial in Renton.
