Marie Margaret Chapman

Marie Margaret McMahon was born in Seattle on Dec 3, 1934, to Edward (Frank) McMahon and Anne McMahon (Edwardo). She grew up in Renton and spent time on her Aunt and Uncle’s farm in Eastern Washington. It was there that she developed a love of animals and gardening. Her maternal grandfather always had a vegetable garden and Marie spent time there enjoying fresh tomatoes, garlic, and peas. In her late teens, Marie enjoyed excursions around the Puget Sound on her Uncle Charlie’s steamship, the Virginia V. After graduating from Aquinas Academy, Marie moved to Tacoma and worked as a secretary for the city. She excelled at shorthand, which she used throughout her life. Marie married in 1957 and had three daughters. Marie loved being a mother and enjoyed teaching her girls how to swim, sew, knit, and cook. A particular favorite activity was making Christmas corsages and other crafts decades before Pinterest. Although Marie worked full time, she was a loving mother, holding birthday parties for her girls and on hot summer days would often take them swimming at Spanaway Lake after work. Marie was also a 4-H Leader, and taught neighborhood children how to sew and knit. She had a beautiful voice and played the piano and organ. In her later years, Marie developed a love of quilting and fabric shopping. She also enjoyed walking around her neighborhood and chatting with neighbors. She had a keen appreciation of antiques and often stopped in at garage sales and second-hand stores looking for ‘treasures’.

Marie was soft-spoken and kind and always had at least one cat or dog that she had rescued. Marie loved her home in Tacoma, where she lived until 2019 when she moved to an adult family home in Bellevue. Marie passed away peacefully July 7, 2023. She is survived by her daughters, Kathleen (Al), Patty (Mike) and Maureen. “Bye for now”
