Mattie M. Johnson Avent was born on January 28, 1938 in Des Moines, IA to the late Rev. Palestine Johnson and Ella Mae Allen Johnson. She passed away peacefully on Weds., Sept. 4 after a long illness in the care of loved ones.

Mattie retired from Boeing in 1994 and loved to cook, travel, and meet new people. She was a strong matriarch of the family — demonstrating love and care.

Mattie leaves to treasure her memory two daughters, Kimberly (Norris) Spellman and Mattrice Martizna; two grandchildren, Danielle Martinez and Mekel Iman; seven great-grandchildren, Amari, Emmanuel Jr., Isaiah, Elijah, Ahnyah, Y’srael, and Samara; one “baby” sister Phyliss “Felicia” Minor Kent, WA; four brothers, Curtis Johnson of Long Beach, CA, Donald (Delores) Johnson of Pasadena, CA, Harold (Flora) Johnson of Des Moines, IA, and Earl Johnson of Moreno Valley, CA; one sister-in-law, Doris (Phillip) Johnson of Darlington, SC; a special cousin, Sadie Allen, Seattle, WA; a son-in-love, Photo Iman; a special friend and angel, Rose Price; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends who mourn her passing.

A time of gathering will be held at 4:00 p.m. this Fri., Sept. 13 at the Greenwood Memorial Park Funeral Home – 350 Monroe Ave NE, Renton, Washington 98056.
