Mirafe was the steadfast heart and cornerstone of our family—our gentle, unwavering force who lovingly held us all together through life’s joys and challenges. She passed away peacefully on July 15, 2025, surrounded by immediate loved ones who cherish her memory deeply.
Born in the Philippines on October 16, 1955, Mirafe dedicated her life to education and nurturing others. Earning her Master’s Degree in Education from Pangasinan State University, she taught elementary students and adults in non-formal education with great patience and passion. She also managed the school cafeteria, where her lifelong love for cooking blossomed—a gift she shared generously with family and friends throughout her life.
In 1996, Mirafe and her beloved family made Washington home. She worked as a nursing assistant until retiring in 2015, admired by colleagues and patients alike for her compassionate and loving nature. Her professional life reflected the same care and dedication she poured into her family and community.
At the heart of her home, Mirafe’s kitchen was a sanctuary filled with the rich aromas of Filipino dishes that nourished both body and soul. No one ever left her table hungry or unloved. Her cooking was more than a craft—it was an expression of love that brought everyone closer, creating countless treasured memories. Beyond the kitchen, she found joy in music, tending to her cherished plants, and watching her favorite Filipino dramas.
A selfless pillar, Mirafe devoted herself wholeheartedly to raising multiple generations. Her wisdom, gentle spirit, and unwavering values were a guiding light for her children, grandchildren, and all who knew her. She taught us patience, kindness, and resilience—a lasting legacy inspiring all who loved her.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Jose Merlin; her children Ferdinand (Zheng), Democracy, and Joan Marie; her cherished grandchildren Mirafe-Joy, Joross Almer, Etta, and Ethan; and her siblings Catalina, Nelsie, Nida, Neire, Noli, Norla, and Nanet. She was preceded in death by her parents Catalino Sr. and Dionisia, Susante; beloved daughter Mhylene; siblings Romualdo, Catalino Jr., Melchor; and grandson Dwight Kelly.
Though our hearts ache at her passing, we celebrate Mirafe’s extraordinary life—filled with compassion, strength, and endless love. Her spirit lives on in the recipes she lovingly shared, the lessons imparted, and the love woven into the fabric of our family.
