To the Maxwell Family... 
Every time we look at a star shining above, we will think of Steve.  

At the memorial, we heard many stories about Steve, but I have one Mr. Fix-It story that I shall never forget… It was our 2nd year at Renton Stadium for The Return to Renton Benefit Car Show and Cruise-in.  I was in charge of registration; the plan was for me to set up at the ticket windows.  It was 6am, the gates where I needed to be were locked, and there was no one on site to unlock them.  Soon, it was 6:30am, and I was beginning to panic, because I had vehicle owners wanting to register…. Steve happened to be walking by, and I saw his friendly face, and blurted out, "Can you help me Steve?!?!"  He stopped, stood back on his heels, saw my look of despair and came over to see what the matter was.  I explained what was going on, and he stood up straight, put his pointing finger in the air and said just a minute, then headed off into the parking lot… I thought what is he doing?  He came back in about 5 minutes with a pouch, when he opened the pouch it was filled with tools.  He got out an open-ended wrench and crescent wrench.  We walked over to the gate where he put those wrenches to work, and whatcha know?!?!?  I was able to set up the registration table, and was in business 15 minutes later!  What a guy!  He was my knight in shining armor that day!  Ever since that day, we had a bond, that no one will ever replace.

We will miss Steve’s "Hello, How ya’ Doing" and his giant smile... we will miss Steve's curiosity... we will miss Steve's presence at car events... we will miss Steve's stories.... (I will miss his rib poking in Return To Renton meetings...)  But, most of all, we will miss Steve's can-do attitude!

Marcie, Denise and Michael - the Memorial Service was wonderful. What we could see from the outside it was so packed we could not get in. When Jim and I walked up and saw his car I imagined him sitting in it with that cool look on his face and those sunglasses.  The picture on the front of the Memorial was great and exactly how I will remember him.  The show of people was amazing and a true tribute to his service, friendship, and generosity.  You were blessed with a great guy and by the looks of the slideshow, wonderful memories.  Someday you will all be together again riding in that great red car in the sky! We will all miss Steve; he touched so many of our lives with his kind heart and generous nature.  We feel so very blessed to have had Steve in our lives as a very dear friend.  We will miss seeing Steve in the Challenger, those Friday date nights and the trips to IW with Marcie and "Juan the Pool Boy."    Until we meet again in IW Juan!

Marcie, Denise, Michael and all of the family, it was a beautiful service in honor of Steve's life and I continue to lift you all up in prayer during this difficult time.  You know, it seems as though I am reminded how very fragile and precious our lives are and I ask, what is our purpose in this life of ours?  I do not believe it is our accomplishments and achievements that make us who we are, or that will even mean much when we die.  I believe it is how we have loved and given of ourselves, each day, to all of those that God has placed in our lives while we are here on this earth, that really matters....could it be that our love is the most important thing we can give....should it be our purpose?  I really appreciated being able to celebrate Steve's life with all of his closest friends and family.  It seems as though Steve was very blessed....

Dear Maxwell family,

  I didn't know Steve Maxwell, but I knew of him and his red Dodge Challenger.  I first talked to Steve several years ago at (where else?) the 'Return to Renton' car show.  As a Mopar fan and a previous owner of a couple '71 Challengers, I spoke with him briefly and with a fondness of these magnificant cars.  The history of Steve and this car is something rarely heard of and rather amazing.

I always enjoy seeing your cars at the local car shows.  There's an adrenaline rush just seeing them on display because they're like nothing else.  

Everyone once in a while, I'd catch a glimpse of that red Challenger out on the road with the top down and Steve behind the wheel soaking it up.  No doubt, the car was either heading to a car show meeting or perhaps taking Steve to the auto parts store to get some fresh motor oil.   Couldn't help but wonder "who was driving who", but each time it left a grin on my face and my inner voice saying, "Wow!". 

I saw Steve a couple times on the road last Spring/Summer.  Once was at the XXX Drive-In in Issaquah where I was having a quick lunch and he stopped by to talk with Jose Enciso (owner) to line up some events there.  The day was nice and the top was down.  The other time was heading down Sunset Blvd and going under 405.  Again, nice day and the top was down.

Steve and his red Challenger have been a legend on these roads for a long time and these few snapshots in my head of 'man and machine' are ones that I'll never forget.  Perhaps the city will rename a stretch of road in his honor.  Seems like a perfect fit.

Marcie and family. I was shocked and saddened to hear fo Steve's passing. Please except my most sincere condolences for your loss. I met Steve when we were in grade school at Bryn Mawr. Although we went our own ways after high school, we crosed paths several times over the years. He was always the same Steve, a good guy. In my book it doesn't get any better than that.

Dear Marcie & Family. Words cannot express how sorry I am for the loss of an amazing man, husband, father and friend to many! I have so many fond memories of Steve at Auntie Lucy's...him walking in at holiday dinners in his uniform, with that great big warm smile! He touched so many lives in so many ways that will never be forgotten. I have personal memories of the times I rode along side him in his patrol car -- he always encouraged my own dream of becoming an officer some day. He was a Mentor, quick witted, kind, loving, funny and straight to the point! He is missed and will always be remembered. My loving thoughts go out to you all! May you all find some peace during such a difficult time!

I remember a few times when Dean and I went deer hunting with Steve and Mike. One morning I brewed the coffee, after letting it perk for a good 5 minutes I turned it off. Steve tasted it and gave me that wry "not done" look and turned it back on for another 10 minutes of perking. That stuff was so thick, but it was "just right", great camp coffee!

I'll be up on one of my favorite hills on Sunday, watching deer, hawks, eagles, and one huge owl. In my backpack will be 2 beers, one for Steve and one for me.

Marcie, Denise, Paul and Michael, there is no shortcut through grief. It is true that only with time can your pain be lessened. Remember how much Steve influenced all of you. That will always be there. Love, Jerry and Kathleen Sidwell and family

I can promise you, eventually all you'll do is laugh about the Man, the life you've shared here on this earth, and the next one that's to come.  He'll show up in the oddest ways too, I suspect that Michael will have some trouble with something on his car, and then some little nugget will pop in his head to fix the problem, that will be Steve. Denise will notice a smell or a warm spot in her heart, that too will be Steve.  Marcie, it does get better, just let it come slowly, he loves you still, every time he spoke about you his eyes would twinkle, that's what everyone in love wants.  Stay strong as a family. My best memory of Steve is when he came to my rescue on I-405 after John's truck broke down. After making sure the truck was far enough over to the side of the road & loading me into his own car he gave me a good scolding about the dangers of getting out of a disabled vehicle on the freeway. I will miss him & you are all in my prayers.

If there's one expression that's consistently used to describe Steve, it's "a great guy." For many of us, that sentiment truly does sum up the essence of his being. Bryce and I knew him as a genuinely thoughtful person who immediately welcomed us into the community and always made us feel at ease -- especially when he'd cut through boredom or stuffiness with a wry observation or funny expression. 

Steve was a true role model within our community, and someone whose legacy will shine bright with all who knew him, as well as those who are uplifted by the Maxwell Foundation. Our hearts go out to you during this difficult time.

Dear Marcie and Family --
As Jody Warren's sister, it seems I have known and admired your family for many years.  Kerry and I were saddened to learn that Steve had passed away.  You are all in our hearts and thoughts as you face life without your beloved Husband and Dad.

My favorite memory of Steve was at the customer appreciation concert where Darren Motamedy rocked the stage in a great performance.  He played all of Marcie's favorites.  Steve was having such a wonderful time listening to the jazz, laughing and clapping.  Marcie was mostly right beside him but both of you were hopping up and down to greet friends and check on details. I know those events were a lot of preparation and work for your family and staff, too, but seeing Steve enjoying himself made me realize that it was also a lot of fun.  And that made it all the more enjoyable for us to see you both so happy!

We will always have pictures of him in our mind of him walking the auction baskets around at the Renton district PTSA fundraiser and awards ceremony, his humor and good nature always convinced people to bid for the cause! He was so involved in our Community, he will be missed very much by so many people. Mostly, We will miss seeing him at your side, you were always so supportive of each other.

Saved this for my specials Stevie, God saw him getting tired, and a cure was not to be. So He put his arms around him and whispered "come with me". With tearful eyes we watched him suffer and saw him fade away.Although we loved him dearly, we could not make him stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hardworking hands to rest.God broke our hearts to prove to us he only takes the best!

Marcie.  I was so sad for you and yours when we received the E-Mail from Tina this morning.  I am sure that your husband is in a much finer place.  I know from my experiences that it is never easy to loose someone you love and cherish.  I do believe that as each day goes by it becomes a bit easier.  Hopefully that will be the case for you and yours.
