Valerie Jean (Deguchi) Brewer was born December 31, 1944, in Canada, and was promoted to her heavenly home on October 29, 2026. She is preceded by her brother Herb (1997) and her mother Hama (2015). Valerie is survived by her husband, Malcolm Brewer.
Valerie grew up on a 40-acre strawberry farm; at the age of five or six, she was introduced to waking up at 5:00 am to go pick strawberries. Living on a fruit farm was not seasonal; there was always work to do year-round. This is where Valerie learned at an early age her work ethic.
She accepted the Lord as her personal Saviour at the age of 12. She attended Miller College of the Bible (MMBI) in Saskatchewan from 1966-1969. After graduating, she did a three-month summer programme with Global Recordings Network (GR) in Los Angeles. This was where she first met Malcolm while attending the Evangelical Free Church. She joined GR in 1969 and retired in 1997. Her first assignment as a Field Recordist was with the First Nations people in Canada and the USA. She transferred to Canada in the 1970s where in addition to field work, she helped run the Toronto office for two years before being asked to open an office in Nairobi, Kenya in 1977.
She spent the next 19 years working out of the Nairobi office and recording Gospel messages in numerous languages and dialects in Kenya, Uganda, Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire), Sudan, Ethiopia, Zambia, and Tanzania. In 1997 she retired and returned to Canada.
In 1999, she was asked to help administer the Canadian Office for Red Sea Mission Team (now ReachAcross) and in 2010 she retired (again) to care for her 92-year-old mother. In 2010 she and Malcolm (now widowed) reconnected, and in God’s timing were married in 2012.
Valerie’s favorite verses were:
Romans 8:28
And we know all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
Jeremiah 29:11-13
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord “plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and future 12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all you heart.”
