
Jack J. Hunter, age 89, went to join his loving wife Saturday, March 1, 2014 at St. Mary’s Hospital surrounded by his family. He was born January 12, 1925 to Jesse and Ruth (Swanson) Hunter of Rhinelander. He attended the County Normal grade school, Rhinelander Jr. and Senior High Schools. He served in the Army during World War II from May 8, 1943 until January 22, 1946. When he came home, he met the love of his life Beverly M. Felch. They married September 20, 1946.
Jack always wanted to become a Police Officer, which he did. He served for 31 Years on the Rhinelander Police Force, and became Rhinelander’s first Detective. He was nicknamed the “24 hour cop”. He was so proud and loved what he did. Jack’s family originated in Sugar Camp and he loved the area. He looked forward to the hunting season, as he would spend days with his sons and nephew Mark at the hunting shack.
He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He cared for his wife at home until her passing in 2011
He loved to talk about the good ol’ days and had lots of stories to tell. Jack was very well known at the “Cookery” and “Friendship House” as he would go have his daily pancake and 1 scrambled egg. Not to mention the “Strawberry Shortcake” at the “Cookery”.
Jack is survived and will be missed by his four children Dawn (Tom) Francis, Dan (Jackie) Hunter, Chuck Hunter, and Cindy (Skip) Dulin, his “pride and joys” - eight grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, his brother Richard (Judy), Dennis (Pat) and a sister Marlene Tushoski, a special nephew Mark (Cheryl) Hendrickson, and a special niece Lynn (Chuck) Pentek. He is further survived by family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, beloved wife Beverly, and sisters Joan and Jean.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, March 8, 2014 at 10:30am at Hildebrand Russ Funeral Home with Pastor Rebecca Niese officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Home cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be Saturday morning beginning at 9:00am until the time of service.
