

Dick was a proud member of the 1938-39 Rhinelander High School Basketball team which was the only team to date to go on to win the Wisconsin State Championship in Rhinelander. In 2008 he was inducted into the 28th Annual Athletic Booster Club. He attended Iowa State for a short time where he studied horticulture. In his younger years he played basketball as a semi-pro with a Rhinelander traveling team, enjoyed coaching youth basketball, was an avid fisherman, golfer, bowler, gardener, and a Packer and Badger fan. He and Dorothy were active in their church and community. Dick was a WWII veteran having served in the US Navy in the Pacific.
Dick and Dorothy were married for 62 years. After retiring from Wisconsin Public Service where he had worked for 30 years as a meter reader and then shop manager, they created and ran Modot Antiques.
Dick, also known as Mo to his friends, was known for his quick wit, bad puns, and a smile that lit up the room. He loved children, his hometown of Rhinelander and the wonderful community of friends he shared here.
He is survived by his daughter, Susan Marks, son-in law, John Bushong of Madison, and son, David Marks of St. Anthony, Minnesota. Surviving nieces and nephews are Jan Torbenson, LuRae Wilhelm, and Joan Schluter (Ernie) of Rhinelander, Ray Hall (Lynn) of Wausau, Linda (David) Gillingham of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Sue Wilhelm (Plover) and Wes Stafford of Iron River, Michigan.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Lula Marks, his beloved wife, Dorothy, as well as, one brother, Robert, three sisters, Beryl Stafford (Jim), Helen Hall (Alvin), and Lorraine Wilhelm (Carl), and nephews, Richard Wilhelm and Don Torbenson.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastors Tim and Kari Vadis officiating. Military honors will follow. Visitation at 10 AM till time of service at church. Hildebrand Russ Funeral Home, 715-365-4343 is assisting the family with arrangements.
