His childhood years were spent in Fort Worth, Abilene and Garland. He graduated from South Garland High School, class of 1969, and became a licensed mortician, working in the family business of a close friend.
Shortly thereafter, he met and married his wife, Marilou Baker. They were wed on July 12, 1975 and shared 43 loving years together. He worked at the family furniture store and then took a management position with a local cabinet and construction company. He went on to receive a bachelor’s degree in business from University of Texas at Dallas. Afterwards, he joined E-Systems, which became Raytheon, where he worked for 20 years as part of their Human Resources management team. He was responsible for labor arbitration and negotiations and helped teach and support employees at a US government facility in Alice Springs, Australia.
Throughout this time, Skipper was heavily involved in the community and was recognized with numerous awards. He served as a commissioner of the Garland Softball Association and was a member of the Board from 1982- 2014. He helped start a slow-pitch youth softball league and coached a team for many years. He also served as part of Leadership Garland and mentored students from Mari’s classes. After retirement, he continued to stay active supporting his family, friends and community. He loved building projects and smoking meat for his family and friends. He also enjoyed spending time at the family beach house, walking his dog Lexi in the waves, and playing with his grandkids.
Skipper was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother, setting an example with his generous spirit. He is survived by his wife Mari; his daughter Lindsey and his son Adam; his grandchildren Ellie, Rosalie and Sam; his siblings Jackie and Bill; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family members.
The family wishes to express its gratitude for the loving care provided by MD Anderson as Skipper fought his battle against cancer and to the Hospice team from Kindred. The family requests memorial donations be made to MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
