John Ray Tisdale, Jr. and Bessie Emma Tisdale, devoted husband and wife, parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents, passed away peacefully just one week apart in the summer of 2025. John passed away on July 30 at the age of 86, followed by Bessie on August 6, also at the age of 86.

For 63 years, John and Bessie shared a life built on love, family, hard work, humor, and unwavering devotion to one another. Their greatest legacy is the family they built together and the countless memories they created along the way.

John was born on January 26, 1939, in Batesville, Mississippi, to John Ray Tisdale and Bessie Bell Tisdale. Because of his father’s work as a construction supervisor for a large general contractor, John moved frequently during his childhood. During his senior year of high school, his family moved to Leesville, Louisiana, where he met the love of his life, Bessie Emma Graham.

Bessie was born on March 2, 1939, in Leesville, Louisiana, to Ben E. Graham and Docie Trull Graham. She was born and raised in Leesville, where she graduated as valedictorian of Leesville High School. During her senior year, she met John, beginning a relationship that would become the foundation of their lives together.

John attended LSU, where he studied electrical engineering and later earned his master’s degree. Bessie attended McNeese State University and later began her professional career as a bank teller in Lake Charles, LA, a position she was especially proud of.

John and Bessie married in 1961 and over the next several years, their family grew quickly, with four children born within a five-year span. Bessie devoted herself to raising their children and creating a loving home, while John built his professional career..

In 1966, the family settled in Richardson, Texas, where they would make their home and raise their four children. John spent his career in the Richardson area with Texas Instruments and later Alcatel, while Bessie devoted herself to their family and the many activities and responsibilities that came with raising four children. John also spent a large part of his personal time coaching his children’s various sports teams and supporting them in their activities.

Family was at the center of both of their lives. As their children grew and eventually began families of their own, John and Bessie embraced their roles as grandparents with tremendous enthusiasm. They enjoyed attending the school events and activities involving their grandchildren and cherished the time they spent together at their lakehouse on Cedar Creek Lake. The lakehouse became a special place for the entire family—a place where generations could gather, spend time together, and create memories that would last a lifetime.

John lived a life marked by integrity, kindness, and purpose. He was also a natural tinkerer who could fix or repair nearly anything, from homes and vehicles to whatever happened to need attention. In his later years, he spent countless hours in his music room, where he enjoyed playing the drums, guitar, and keyboard and pursuing his passion for songwriting. His musical talent and creativity were an important part of who he was.

Bessie was known for her kindness, quick wit, and sense of humor. She had a playful side as well, including her love of collecting Beanie Babies, a hobby she enjoyed sharing with her grandchildren. Her warmth, humor, and genuine interest in her family made her a constant and beloved presence in their lives.

Together, John and Bessie created a home where family came first. They were generous with their time, their resources, and their love. John also believed strongly in giving back and generously supported organizations including Smile Train and Doctors Without Borders.

Their legacy lives on through their four children: Mike Tisdale of Plano; Cammie Tisdale of Allen; Wendy Brock (Mark) of College Station; and Barry Tisdale (Elizabeth) of Plano.

They were proud grandparents to Ashley Anderson (Nick), David Brock, Ally Moore, Brooke Tallas, Tyler Tisdale (Audrey), and Teagan Tisdale. Their great-grandchildren—Ellie Blu Tisdale, Elijah Tisdale, and Emma Anderson—brought them immense joy in their later years.

John is also survived by his sisters, Brenda Tidwell (James), Fredda Caruthers (Ricky), and Mitzi Peeterse (Charlie). He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Faye White and Ruth Newman.

Bessie is also survived by her sister-in-law, Shirley Graham. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, David Graham, Buck Teal, George Graham, Sr., and Pete Graham. John and Bessie will be remembered not only for the 63 years they spent together, but for the family and legacy they created during those years. John’s humor, musical talent, generosity, and ability to fix nearly anything will be remembered alongside Bessie’s kindness, wit, humor, and devotion to her family.

Their lives were deeply intertwined, and their greatest accomplishment was the family they built together. Though their passing came only one week apart, the love and influence they shared throughout their 63 years of marriage will continue through their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and the generations to come.

A celebration of John and Bessie’s lives will be held at 1:00 p.m. on September 26, 2026, at Sparkman Funeral Home in Richardson, Texas.
