

Louis Coleman Johnston M.D., the only child of Louis and Teresa Johnston passed away on April 25, 2011. Louis was born and raised in Waxahachie, Texas. Louis graduated from Waxahachie High School in 1943 then joined the Army Air Corp achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. Honors included the Soldier’s Cross-for Valor. While serving in Germany he met the love of his life; Kathleen Patricia Murphy was an Irish citizen serving in the American Red Cross. The couple married in 1948 while both were stationed in Germany. In August 1948 Louis brought his bride to Texas. After receiving his degree from Baylor University he attended the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School graduating with honors in 1956. Louis completed his training at St. Paul’s Hospital and then joined the Samuel Clinic enjoying a partnership that spanned several decades. After retiring in 1999 he continued to work as a volunteer physician at a clinic operated by the Dallas Life Foundation.
Louis was the consummate physician. The patient always came first. He was a long time respected member of the medical staff at St. Paul’s Hospital. Louis was dedicated to performing community service. He served on numerous local and state boards.
Louis had a passion to serve the Catholic community and cared for many of the local priests and nuns. He was President of the Catholic Physicians Guild. In 1981 he received the rare honor of being named a Confrater of the Cistercian order. He was a member of the first Cistercian School Board. From 1962 until 1980 he served as the team physician for Jesuit High School. In 2001 he was elected to Jesuit’s Sports Hall of Fame.
Louis is survived by his wife Kitty, five children, Richard, Kevin, Stephen, Brian and Murphy. 12 grandchildren, Brendan, Meredith, Graham, Shelly, Erin, Colleen, Will, Wes, Kit, Cole, Conner and Cameron and 2 great grandchildren, Hannah and Ellen.
The Rosary will be at St. Monica Church Tuesday April 26, 2011 at 7:30pm. Final funeral arrangements are pending for Wednesday at Cistercian Abbey.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Cistercian Monastery or to the Jesuit College Preparatory School.
