It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well lived that we announce the passing of Mary Jim Quirk, who peacefully left this world on April 19, 2026, at the age of 86. Born on February 9, 1940, in Baltimore, Maryland, Mary Jim was a beacon of warmth, love, and resilience whose kindness touched countless lives.
The beloved daughter of James and Virgie Hoffa, Mary Jim grew up alongside her sisters, Virgie and Lenore, who predeceased her. Their bond shaped her life, and her love for family remained a guiding light.
In 1962, she married the love of her life, Thomas Quirk, with whom she shared 44 years of devotion until his passing in 2007. Together they raised four children—Scott, Bryan, Michael (Sara), and Christine (David)—who survive her and carry forward her legacy of compassion and strength. She was a proud grandmother to five cherished grandchildren: Jackson, Madison, Harrison, William, and Dillon, each a source of immense joy.
Mary Jim earned her degree in education from Towson State College and began her career as a stewardess for American Airlines, embracing adventure in the early 1960s. Her true calling, however, was in early childhood education. She served as an elementary and preschool teacher and later supported educators through her work at the Early Childhood Training Center in Omaha, Nebraska. After moving to Evansville, Indiana, she continued her lifelong commitment to children and families through CASA, the Evansville Dream Center, a women’s shelter, and hospice volunteering. Her impact was deep, lasting, and felt by many.
A woman of unwavering faith, Mary Jim was an active member of her church communities throughout her life. Following her husband’s passing, she served as a grief share group leader, offering comfort and understanding to others navigating loss.
As we mourn her passing, we also celebrate the extraordinary life she lived—a life marked by love, service, and steadfast faith. Her warmth, generosity, and gentle spirit will be dearly missed, but her memory will continue to guide those she leaves behind.
A graveside memorial service will be held in Baltimore on Saturday, May 30, where family and friends will gather to honor her life and the joy she brought to the world.
Rest in peace, Mary Jim. Your life was a blessing, and your memory a treasure
