Neil Gehrig, beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather and husband, known and cherished by all for his loving heart, passed away October 10, 2025, at the age of 93. His life of appreciation and achievement will be celebrated January 15, 2026, at 2:00pm at First United Methodist Church Richardson.
Neil was born June 4, 1932, in Schuylkill Haven, PA to Robert C. Gehrig Jr. and Catherine B. Gehrig. After graduating high school in 1950, Neil attended Lafayette College in Easton, PA. He joined the Phi Delt fraternity while there, graduating in 1954 with a BS in chemistry. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1955 and following graduation from Officers Candidate School, he served in active duty until March 1959. Neil continued his military service as an active reservist, retiring as a Navy Captain after 26 years.
Neil spent his career in the research and development side of the commercial explosives industry. His dedicated and groundbreaking research resulted in the creation of new and safer detonating materials for the industry. He was granted 13 U.S. patents, numerous foreign patents, and was recognized by Who’s Who in Chemistry, Men and Women in Science, and Who’s Who in Technology. All of his Family applaud his dedication and that of others to bring safety to the workplace for so many.
Neil married Martha Magee on April 30,1977. They spent 48 happy years living first in Westwood Hills, KS, then Pittsburg, KS, and finally in Richardson, TX. During those years traveling the U.S. by car; seeing this beloved country from the “ground floor” brough joy and discovery to them both. Some of that discovery included bird watching on the Texas coast for twenty years and looking for antique toy trains and books. Neil became an avid reader in retirement and liked working with the Seniors Group at Church. In work and play, Neil sought the new and unknown, led by his joy filled curiosity.
Neil is survived by his wife, Martha, two children from a former marriage; Greg Gehrig and wife, Kris, and Barbara Ingetti, and two stepchildren, Kerry Magee and Erin Magee; his grandchildren Chad Gehrig and wife, Cassandra; Courtney Gehrig, and Christian Ingetti. Cole Gehrig, his great grandson and child of Chad and Cassandra. A long list of nieces and nephews and their children also survive Neil. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Bob Gehrig and his wife, Gladys, and by his brother Gary and his wife, Betsy.
All of Neil’s family, especially Matha, want to honor Latricia Anyanwu for her assistance in helping provide excellent and loving care of him at home in his last months. It gave him peace.
