Richard A. Reed died peacefully in his sleep at The Landon at Lake Highlands in Dallas, Texas. Richard was born to John Jerome Reed and Margaret Agnes (McGeeney) Reed in Cornwall, New York. He graduated from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 1954 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. He married Diane Helen Hinman of North Platte, Nebraska on June 11, 1955. Richard served 3 years in the US Navy as a pilot and flight instructor. Afterwards, he obtained his Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Harvard University, followed by a certification in public accountancy (“CPA”). Richard spent most of his professional life with Texas Instruments (“TI”) in Dallas. He retired in 1994 after 28 years with TI.
Richard was dedicated to his work but also to his recreation. Blessed with an adventurous spirit, Richard was an avid fisherman, had a sailboat on Lake Ray Hubbard which he enjoyed, took his motorcycle on solo trips around the country, hiked (including on the Appalachian Trail), and ran marathons (including finishing in the 1973 Boston Marathon). Richard’s adventurous spirit applied to vacations with his family during which the family traveled by car to camp all over the United States. During retirement, he and his wife Diane traveled around the world, including volunteer stints with the Citizens Democracy Corps, a US-funded nonprofit focused on volunteer work in Eastern Europe and other post-communist countries. Richard and Diane had a strong commitment to civic involvement during their 67-year marriage. They were active at St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Plano. They also held various leadership positions during their 31-year membership with the Dallas Elks Lodge.
Survivors include his children Anne (Steve) Knowles, Carol (Ken) Davis, and Mike (Jan) Reed, as well as 5 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Richard was predeceased by his parents and sister Jane. His wife Diane predeceased Richard in 2022.
