He rose to the rank of captain in the South Vietnamese army and was an esteemed liaison officer in the Defense Attaché Office (DAO) working alongside the U.S. military. In 1975, with the imminent fall of Saigon, he was forced to leave his home country or face imprisonment.
After receiving a letter from Thai, Howard and Judy Watson sponsored the Ha family to live in Muleshoe, TX. He had become friends with the Watsons in 1966 while attending officer training in Fort Benning, GA, with Howard’s brother, retired Colonel Don Watson. After resettling in Lubbock, he worked at Texas Tech University as a commercial painter. He found joy in fishing and being the proud owner of a laundromat. In their new home country, he provided a life filled with opportunities for his family.
