Augustus Thomas Poovey Jr., 78, of Garland, TX, passed away on Thursday, April 3, 2025, surrounded by his family. Tom was born in San Antonio, TX where he was blessed with parents Augustus Thomas Sr. and Cora Lee Poovey (Deaver).
During Tom’s high school years, he moved to Houston. He attended the University of Houston and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology. Tom’s favorite job was with Schneider Electric. He would retire from Schneider officially after decades of service. However, Tom continued to consult one day a week and was still working to the day he passed.
Tom married Gayle in 1976 in Garland and cherished the life they built with their two sons, Tony and Kenny. He loved being a Father and gave them the nurturing and care they needed for their entire life. Tom was very proud of them and their biggest fan.
Tom was faithful and served at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church as an usher. He was active and an advocate in Pro-life, where he assisted Gayle in Gabriel’s Angels. Sir Knight Tom was a 4th degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus. He served several years in the Color Corps before his illness made active participation impossible.
He will always be remembered as being loving and caring, but Tom enjoyed being a prankster and often had tall tales for anyone who would listen. He religiously watched the Dallas Cowboys and never missed a ghost story. Tom loved history, particularly Texas history, and was proud of his country.
He is survived by his wife Gayle; sons Tony and Kenny; his favorite and dearest daughter-in-law Jessica; granddaughter Angela; her husband Cameron, and first great-grandson Riley; his Godchildren Kimberly, Sarah, and KJ. He is also survived by his brothers Lee and his wife Pat, J.J., and his sisters Helen, Margie, Ruby and her husband Hilroy.
Tom is preceded in death by his parents A.T. and Cora Lee, and his brothers Jimmy, Darrell, and Ryon, and sisters Irene, Francis, Barbara, and Judy.
I lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation in Tom’s name to Gabriel’s Angels or the American Heart Association. Links are provided below.
