Born in Pennsylvania, Velma later made her home in Bark River, Michigan. She was a proud graduate of Bark River-Harris High School, where she played softball and built lifelong roots. Following graduation, she answered the call to serve her country, proudly serving in Marine Aviation at the Navy Annex in Washington for over 35 years before retiring in 1998. Throughout her distinguished career, she earned numerous honors for her accomplishments, including recognition from General Mundy.
In January 1958, Velma met Donald H. Jones of Oklahoma, whom she married and shared a life with, raising three daughters: Deborah Washburn (born 1959), Patricia Wilson (born 1962), and Cherri Lopez (born 1965). As a mother and community member, Velma was remarkably dedicated. She faithfully volunteered at St. Bernard School—eventually becoming a permanent staff member—and remained active with the St. Bernard Church.
Velma lived a vibrant life full of diverse talents and passions. An accomplished accordion player, she delighted audiences in various recitals, with lively polkas being her absolute favorite. She also expressed her creativity through painting, loved traveling with friends, and found joy in the outdoors, gardening, and caring for animals. Among her favorite memories was the thrill of her first hot air balloon ride.
Above all, Velma was devoted, honest, and fiercely protective of her loved ones. She always taught her family the Golden Rule, and her daughter Cherri fondly remembers her mother's steadfast advice: "Work hard and don't let others bully you." Always willing to lend a hand to friends and neighbors, Velma touched countless lives with her generosity.
Velma was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Ida Meyers, and her four sisters, Dorothy, Mary, Barbara, and Margaret. She is survived by her three daughters, six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Pepper and Jeanette Polakoff for their unwavering support and kindness through the years.
To the best mom anyone could ask for: Our mom will forever be in our hearts. Thank you for your support, your wisdom, and for always being there. You will never be forgotten, and it gives us comfort knowing you are finally at peace with your family. Until we meet again.
The Jones family does not have any public services scheduled at this time, but family and friends are welcome to leave messages of condolences, stories, and memories in the guestbook below.
