David Preston Jones
December 25, 1927 – December 2, 2017
David P. Jones died Saturday, December 2, 2017 at his residence at Homeplace Assisted Living in New Bern, NC. A Winston-Salem native, his last years were joyfully spent in New Bern nearer to family, including grand and great grandchildren who kept him young.
He served his country as a Naval pilot, and enjoyed a lifetime career as a pilot for United Air Lines. He was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in New Bern. He was an avid golfer, loved fishing, and was a rare coin collector. His most valued treasures were his wife and his family.
He is preceded in death by his parents, A. Crouse Jones and Susannah Tucker Jones, and his brothers Ray and Wade Jones.
He is survived by Betty Jean Jones, his wife of 67 years; six children, Michael (wife Karen), Gary (wife Laurie), Beverly Evans (husband Robert), Linda Salzman (husband Dave), Mary, and Tony (wife Nancy McCormick). He had six grandchildren; Matt Salzman, Jessica Hardison, Richard Clark, Sarah Clark, Ryan Jones, and Rich Del Russo; and five great grandchildren; Lacey, Mason , Peyton, Abigail Hardison, and Brennan Del Russo. He is also survived by his sister Bettie Cook, and several nephews and nieces. His humor, generosity, integrity, and unfailing optimism will be remembered always.
A private family service will be held on December 16, 2017.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or the Arthritis Foundation.

I did not know Mr Jones personally, however I knew him through the limbs he grew from his tree.
By those limbs I know he was a generous loving and caring man. I knew him to be a humble serving person.
