His Life and Love Journey
James Artis Henderson, Jr. (aka Hawkeye) wa sborn in Shreveport, LA on October 23, 1951, to his parents James, Sr. and Vassie Henderson. He was the second eldest of six children. James accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age under the pastoral care of his uncle, Reverend Lacy Douglas.
James received his education in the Richmond Unified School District and after high school he became gainfully employed with the Richmond Sanitation Company. James decided that being a garbage man wasn't the life he wanted so he enrolled and attended Molar Barber College in Oakland, CA where he graduated and received his State of California Barber license.
Upon receiving his California Barber License, James operated a chair space at Owen's Barber Shop on Cutting Blvd in Richmond, CA and later moved his operation to Elite Barber Services on Barrett Ave in Richmond, CA in partnership with his best friend Lavoisier Harper. In 2000, James gained an opportunity to own and operator a barber shop on 36th and MacDonald Ave in Richmond, CA and remained there until he experienced a life changing medical illness in 2006.
James met his loving companion Nancy Carr and one son Jhayson Henderson was born during their relationship, and he later met his second loving companion LaNae Greenwood, and one son Marcel Greenwood was born during their relationship.
James was known as "Hawkeye," a pool shark among Richmond, Berkeley, and San Francisco area pool halls. He enjoyed watching Minnesota Fats, one of the greatest pool players of all times, execute his skills in the game. The skill that it took to become a great pool player James mastered during his leisure time, as well. He also loved reading books on philosophy, nature, and Gandhi's life principles of living a full life with respect to others. Additionally, he enjoyed playing dominoes and had the patience to teach others how to play the game. James loved riding horses, swimming at beaches, water rafting, jet skiing, and canoeing on the Russian River with his sons and enjoyed other family outings.
James enjoyed listening to jazz, blues and attending musical concerts. James had a smile that as golden and an unforgettable, deep belly laugh that brought tears to his own eyes when sharing jokes or life's funny stories with others.
James' favorite pastime was shopping for his suits, shoes, ties and jewelry. He was well known for wearing the finest apparel of menswear when working in the shop nd during his leisure time.
James experienced disappointments and blessings during his journey, but he never quit and would persevere with a kind and loving spirit with no regrets.
On January 20, 2024, he closed his eyes after fighting the good fight and finished his life journey in this world. He is preceded in death by his parents, his siblings: Glenda Henderson, Derek Henderson, and Yvonne Henderson; and one nephew, Rashad Davis.
He leaves to cherish his memory two sons, Jhayson (Rebecca) and Marcel; six grandchildren, Nicole, Jhayson, Jr., Isaiah, Zachary, Dominic and Elijah; two sisters, Bette Fuller and Anda (Ricky) Bushnell; two lifetime companions, Nancy Carr and LaNae Greenwood Franklin; four nieces, Cheska Fuller, Rickeya Bushnell, Jasmine Henderson and Reanda Jennings; six nephews, Shawvonce SImmons, Ricky Bushnell, Jr., Derek Henderson, Jr., Ashley, Ryan and Cameron Wilder; his best friend, Lavoisier Harper, and a host of cousins and friends.
