Paddy has known me all my life and while not related by blood, he was family by choice and I grew up knowing him as “Uncle Paddy”. He would regularly visit our home during my childhood and he could be found at our family’s table during the holidays. My brother Michael & I used to love having Paddy with us on roadtrips when we were kids  as he seemed to have endless stories to tell about his adventures as “The Hammer” and could reliably make us double over in laughter with his infamous song that began with, “When I was young, I had no sense…”. If you knew him then you probably know the rest and that it’s not appropriate for a funeral page. 😄 There are so many funny Paddy-isms. He invariably had a twinkle in his eye and a bounce in his step except for when things weren’t going well in a soccer match and then he’d be muttering & huffing away.

Paddy was a gifted artist. He once sent me some beautiful illustrations of the thatched roof cottages of Ireland. Before I went to spend a few months in Blackrock during college, he gifted me his map of Dublin and was so excited that I’d be going there. He loved California but he always missed home.  He would tear up sentimentally when he’d hear certain Irish ballads played. “The Rocky Road to Dublin” & “Seven Drunken Nights” will forever make me think of him because of how passionately he’d sing them. 

When Paddy was in hospice care before his final stroke, I went with my Mom to visit him with my kids. It was the last time I saw him. My 7 year old spontaneously told Paddy that he thought Paddy would be a bird after he passed, specifically a blue jay. We found a blue jay feather on our way to school recently and we thought you might be visiting us. I love and miss you, Paddy. I’m glad to have known you. I’ll always admire how you never cared much for the opinions of others and how you were always your own man.

The last time we saw Paddy at his house on Locust  a couple weeks before his first stroke.  He wanted to give my son, Magnus, a high five. He showed Magnus his prized bird feeders and told us about all the birds that came to visit him.

Patrick Anthony Hannon born March 6,1939 died on August 4th 2026.
He was a great storyteller and a huge sports fan.  Anyone was welcome to pull up a stool and listen through his lilt and twinkle in his eye a narrative full of real wit and prose . A very gentle and kind man whom everybody loved . A neighborhood favorite .
He came to America over 55 years ago following his brothers Richard and Jeremiah from Ireland in search of  the American dream . They landed in the beautiful Bay Area where they stayed all of their lives namely , Mill Valley.
He will be truly missed  in this community .

So long uncle Paddy , a great carpenter and wonderful  person whom my mam your sister adored. and the rest of our family . May you rest in peace and Im sorry I can't attend your wake as Im 8 thousands Kilometre's away but will raise a glass of fine Irish whiskey to your departure from this earth to join your ancestors in the spiritual world
