Pauline Alexander was born in Menifee, Arkansas on June 21, 1927, with two awesome parents Carl, Sr., and Blanche Flakes. Pauline was the second of seven children. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized in Menifee. Pauline attended schools in Conway, Arkansas. After graduating, she relocated to Kansas City, Kansas, and worked there until returning back to Arkansas. It was there that she would fall in love with one of the Alexander boy’s, James (Mallie) Alexander. The two married on March 31, 1949. To this union, seven children were born.
The couple moved to California around 1952 and made Richmond their home. She united with Pilgrim’s Rest M.B. Church until her health began to fail.
Pauline stayed at home and raised her children until the youngest one began school. Therefore, she began working for the Richmond Unified School district. She found her calling when she became a Community Worker at Nystrom Elementary School. Over the next 30 years, the children and staff at Nystrom would become her second family. Even after her memory began to fade, Mrs. Pauline, as she was affectionately called, would say that she had to go to work.
One of Mrs. Pauline’s hobbies, included the Find-A-Word Puzzle books. You could find one in every room of her home. In fact, her family members got hooked on them, too. She also enjoyed reading novels in bed, and before becoming inactive, bowled with her Nystrom family. Believe it or not, she was pretty good and has the trophies to prove it.
Additionally, Mrs. Pauline enjoyed baseball, Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. Up until this year, she could solve some of the puzzles. Her favorite hobby was organizing and pairing her many clothes, shoes, hats, and jewelry for stepping out in true fashion, to church or other, special events. If at home, you’d see Mrs. Pauline in a different picture. Her daughter Renita says she would put on her “sum-ma wear,” which simply means that she would put on this top, sweater or blouse with that skirt, or those pants, and neither of them would match.
After retiring from Nystrom, if she wasn’t walking with other seniors throughout Parchester village or at the casinos, Mrs. Pauline would be visiting with family and friends here and in Arkansas. This summer, she had a very special moment when her friend of 70 years came to visit her. That visit was priceless. Parchester Villages finest 94 and 92 year olds.
Mrs. Pauline would always say that she lived a good life. Now, as she is resting in the bosom of her Savior, she is living a better life. Dementia may have taken her memories, but, she left an indelible impression on the lives of her loving family and dear friends.
A public viewing for Pauline will be held Wednesday, September 29, 2021 from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Fuller Funerals, Inc, 3100 Cutting Blvd, Richmond, CA 94804. A homegoing celebration will occur Thursday, September 30, 2021 at 11:00 AM at Pilgrim Rest MBC, 831 S 43rd St, Richmond, CA 94804.
