William Learnez Mitchell, age 57, of Rodeo, CA passed away on Sunday, March 28, 2021. He was born May 26, 1963 in Monroe, LA to proud parents William Learnez Hubert and Margaret Marie Mitchell. On his first day home from the hospital PaPa Mitchell took one look at him and declared, “He ain’t no Bigger than a Peanut!” and from that day forward he was affectionately called "Peanut" by family members and close friends.
William reveled in his role as big brother to his siblings Sedric, Jace and younger sister, Katrece. During his elementary school years, William discovered his love for the art of music thru the trumpet. The passions he held for playing the trumpet would stay with him throughout his lifetime.
After a traditional Southern upbringing the family departed Monroe, LA for Oakland, CA in 1977. William attended Oakland Public Schools, graduating from Castlemont High School in 1981 (Go Knights!). Post high school, William returned to LA to take his place at HBCU – Grambling State University on a full music scholarship-trumpet in tow. During his time at Grambling, William was a member of the world famed "Tiger Marching Band”. With this formal education completed, he returned to CA with his Bachelors of Music.
William kept his craft on point at all times, blessing us with his gift in church services, jazz ensembles, special occasions and anyplace the spirit moved him. You could stop by the house on any given day and hear him upstairs perfecting the scales.
William dedicated his professional years to careers with AT&T and Empowerment for Success.
Early on in life, William connected with his spiritually by studying the Bible and developing a loving relationship with God, which came in handy, helping him to navigate life’s obstacles. He was a long standing member of First Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church. Unbeknownst to his family, William was ordained in 2005 as an independent Christian clergyman. He was authorized to conduct any and all Christian services.
Anyone close to William would tell you that he was a private man. A man that did not care for gossip nor the chatter. He never complained or voiced distress. Instead of focusing on what may have ailed him or caused him worry, he was more concerned with ensuring those around him were good. Although he did not have any biological children of his own, he was a father figure, support, confidant, and mentor to many.
William left us far too soon, but we find peace in knowing he is in heaven, resting in God’s loving arms. He leaves his legacy of love and strength to his Mother, Margaret Speed; brothers - Sedric Mitchell, Sr., Jace Davis, and Ricky Brown; sisters - Katrece Davis and Cynthia Brown; partner - Brigida Mason; eleven nieces & nephews; two great-nephews and one great-niece, and a host of friends.
